The administrators who allow such policies should be FIRED, i.e., it's they who should be forced to leave USPS, not the citizens.

You can blame the dogs all you want... what if it was something that could be damaged by water and was left out in the rain? Would that be the rain's fault or the person who left it open to the elements? It really is the same thing.

Jean wins the prize for finding the po at complete & total fault, which includes a call, a knock, SOMETHING to alert special circumstances to the recipient. If there are any doubts, you may visit the USPS direct link here

I am so sorry lady. That is absolutely horrible.

I would be ready to strangle the postman....I would take the box, the dead birds and my husband..march into the post office in front of everyone and begin to raise holy he**!

They are SUPPOSED to call you and certainly employ individuals with enough common sense as to not leave a box that says "LIVE ANIMALS CHICKS" etc sitting outside period. And especially with dogs around.

I would be after that postman's BUTT!

ksacres There is no excuse whatsoever for leaving a box of chicks sitting outside somewhere unprotected. The MORON can read, and knew where the box came from and what was in it...the hatcheries are great at clearly marking the boxes not to mention your can hear them. No excuse for this idiot sorry. The postal system in general needs to be mobbed so hopefully they can hire people with intelligence rather than the mere skill of passing a civil service exam...a teenager can pass that and that does make them qualified for the job either.

This is what dogs do. That is why my chickens don't free range. These are wonderful dogs... but they are DOGS. I MAY be able to train them in the future (we have not had chickens long)... but I wouldn't count on it.

KY... there is no need for belligerence. Your opinion is welcomed if not so much agreed with. I probably shouldn't have said "There is always one."... but I am not having the best of days.

I haven't read every post so I don't know if you said, but did you call the p.o. to give them a heads up that your chickens were coming in? I only mention it because maybe if they had known and been asked to call you, things would have turned out differently. I think a little communication can prevent/solve many problems.

No Blue. I didn't call because last time my postal carrier called me. So I assumed that they would this time as well. I am kicking myself for not doing that.

I worked for DHL, and as any package courier (as in USPS, UPS, FedEx) it is the package courier's responsibility to ensure the package is delivered correctly, in a timly manner, and safe from all elements. They even make us bring plastic bags for boxes, and live items never leave the substation unless we can get a phone call through to the homeowner.

Even if the PO isn't required to call, it's called COMMON SENSE! You don't leave live animals in boxes on front porches...what if she had been at work all day? Even if not for the dogs the chicks could have dehydrated, overheated, etc. Take a second and THINK...use your brain! You just don't DO that! That's like leaving a child alone at a daycare at night b/c mommy didn't pick them up before the daycare closed...COMMON SENSE SAYS YOU DON'T DO IT!
