Thank you. I started day before yesterday. Just wanted to make sure I was making the right choice. I've had chickens for a while, but just found out about the fermented thing. I was thrown off for a second thinking it would be like feeding them moonshine castings...lol. btw...I'm asking for your hatching eggs for my birthday...lol.

lol. I should have plenty. I prefer fermented grain, scraps, and plenty of fresh grass. Grass can fulfill their protein needs. I put water kefir in my fermented grain as a starter. I also feed sod in the winter when fresh grass isn't available, or any sprouts.

I recommend fermented feed so you are definitely on the right path in my opinion!

Well there was a dog attack and killed all the animals I had so I started with new ones and they are all about a year.

I do have some recessive white phoenix that appear to be about 4-5 years old.

I have lost animals to dogs before it is very upsetting, hugs.

I was wonder about sprouts, and what do you all think of things like malt (basically sprouted seed that is then dried)? Sod idea is great.

In the past I fed my birds pretty hippy dippy: scratch, oyster shell, grit mix about 50% & 50% Wild Bird Seed, with veggy and fruit scraps, alfalfa, what ever bugs, slugs and creepy crawlers I could find and left over cooked rice, oatmeal, and such. Besides ferminting and grass/sprouts is there anything you guys would suggest to improve the diet for long tails... I am asking because I have read so much info on diet hurting the birds.

What are you referring to that would hurt them? mealy worms are great. I would not feed too much alfalfa, it tends to run through the birds. I have never used malt , but I guess it would be fine. sprouting milo will create poisonous compounds, so don't try sprouting those. =)

Mine love sprouted sunflower seeds, barley, and mealworms. I keep a small aquarium with crushed bran and oatmeal with my bait store mealworms. They reproduce like crazy so I have a constant supply for treats.

@Tabatha I have never tried fermented feed because I couldn't figure it out lol. I did sprout seeds for a few months and saw nothing different in growth or feather development. The main things I sprouted were black sunflower seeds, Milo, wheat, and oats. They mainly ate Milo and sunflower sprouts.

what I began to use for better development(which I did notice) is a mix of gamebird and layer feed. Sometimes just gamebird or just layer feed depending on how much $$ I could spend.

however for chicks, I did notice they feathered out too fast for their bodies lol. Sometimes their wings would drag. I noticed that instead of everything growing evenly, the tails kicked off after their body was fully feathered(3-4 months)

very upsetting. I lost so many and I had champion and reserve champion of every large fowl class. And a silver phoenix hen I had took Reserve Champion of the whole show. At that time I didn't work with specific breeds.

Ihate dogs my momd dog caught the cord of my batir abd pulled it down breaking all but two of my devolping eggs :/ anyone have eggs they dont need?
