It's too bad you didn't take me up on my offer of free Phoenix at the Springfield Ma Poultry Congress back in Jan., I gave them all to Jose and Shay..........................................................chrisf

Yeah I know! I wanted to, but I just didn't have any room for anything this winter.

To a degree that's correct. A small degree. They did have onagadori in them , that's a lot of what was used to make them, well the ONAGADORI is a breed soley from Japan.
NO PHOENIX were created off those in Japan however. They were mainly made from those birds but largely developed in Germany and to a lesser extent, here in the USA.

That quote does not say they were created in Japan, but that they belong to a group of birds bred in Japan 1000 years ago. Misleading, but not 100% inaccurate either.
Now if it said they were developed in Japan by Japanese breeders, yes that would be 100% wrong. The quickest way to tell one from another without knowing your feathers, is the leg color, all phoenix are to have slate blue legs, onagadori are green, except the whites, they are yellow. Like Onagadori (the user) said, there's no blue legged birds coming out of Japan.

It would be best to say they are a longtailed breed developed in Germany and the USA from the Japanese Onagadori, much less confussing, and maybe then all these blame hatcheries would quit saying they are a Japanese breed with 25 foot tails... I'm sick of seeing that on every hactery site you go to, shows you just how much they know about the birds they sell. Never once has a real phoenix ever even come close to those lenghts, not even in the ball park.

Hey all, just wanted to post an updated pic of my white cockerel. He has what appears to be green legs. I got him from Cy Hyde. I have a question. If I breed him to a hen with slate legs, which is dominant? How long will it take me (generation wise) until I can get back to slate legs? I am unsure of his exact age, (Cy couldn't remember), but his spurs are still nubs. Is it possible to tell at this age how long his tail might get? How do I know if he has the non-moulting gene? Sorry about all the questions, I'm a newb

Thanks in advance for any input.

looking at hm, I'd say he's about 10 months or so give or take a little. No way of knowing how long it will get , time will tell. Cy does have a little onagadori blood in his birds still, thus the green legs, but I doubt it will have the NM gene. The only way to tell for sure would be to isolate him from all other birds after his first adult molt and just let 'em grow, tomebakus are great for this, you will know for sure if he goes several years without a molt. But if kept with or around hens, his hormones will cause him to molt even if he has the MN gene, so isolation is the only way to tell.
As for the legs, yes you should be able to breed back to the standard if using slate leg hens pretty quick, honestly, not sure which is dominate, this is my first year with green legs actually. If Toni-Marie or David see this, they can tell you for sure, they are old pros at them.

He looks beautiful by the way, spittin image of his brother I got from Cy.

White onags have yellow legs. All other colors have willow. Green legs are probably from a cross with blue leg whites. Blue leg whites come in bantam (phoenix). No doubt he could have onagadori blood in him though.

Mopargal: green legs x green legs=100%green...slate x green=mostly slate/ few green 1st cross, then stay with slate x slate or green x green, whatever way you are breeding towards......I've been breeding Hyde birds for years and that's the way his work........when adding a yellow legged bird, however, the outcomes change drastically.............................................................chrisf

Thank you so much for your input

. I have 5 birds from Cy right now, and 5 from Aubrey. I am looking to introduce some new bloodlines too. I would like to keep my gene pool as wide as possible. Does anyone here have eggs,or chicks from different bloodlines available? BTW Aubrey's birds are beautiful!

Also, I have posted on other breed threads before, and the people on this thread have been by far the most friendly and helpful. I just ♥ these birds! Thank you all for being so willing to share your experience/knowledge.
