Post Phoenix Pics Please

will try to get you some pictures in the next month or so. I know that doesnt help with the wanting some any, LOL but I can try to show you the pullet look then the mature hen look. They still look really good as hens, but most all the ones I have had, loose all that heavy cockerel feathering. They are still long, just dont have that stringy look to them usually.

My experience has been that most lines carry the spurred hens when selectively bred for feather quality.. I have birds from all known lines in the united states and the spurred hens run in all of them as well as cockerel feathering after a few years of selection..

You two... *SIGH
I need to start selecting mine. This is my first year and non of mine are cockerel feathered. Are all your pullets cockerel feathered? Or just very few out of a large hatch?

Next year I am going to try to mass produce phoenixes.
BTW AUBREY ! THANKS FOR REFERRING ME TO THE HOVABATOR GENESIS... Omg I had an amazing hatch this summer...
Over 100 ! I was kind of lazy/naughty so I just kept adding eggs into the incubator .... All still hatched great .... It was a cycle of hatching for a good 3 weeks hahaha.

It seems like all of my silver pullets have 'sickle' tails this year, will they molt into cock feathering? I have a couple sumatra hens with what looks like all pointed feathers too, just not glossy like a rooster

My experience is they are more likely to molt the cockerel feathering out, not molt into it.. Usually it shows up in juvenile feathering.. But occasionally you get a hen who retains it.. I have had hens not molt their tails for a year before.

That's great to hear on your hatch improvments.

and no, not all do hatch as cockerel feathered hens. Some pens I get more than others, but they are pens that have a lot of the hens in it that carry those genes. If you are just shooting in the dark with hens that dont show or carry that trait, it's a pretty odd ball chance to get one.
try to find you some spurred hens to start with, or a pullet with cockerel feathering and go from there. Right now, I keep back all those for my own breedings, as do most breeders. So they may well be hard to find out side of eggs or chicks from people who have these in their breeding program.

Told that will b later (mayb next month)

what r the licenses and/or certificates that I will need to get in Texas?
What is the BEST way to take care of their tail feathers?

Goin to build a Large Coup for them in the barn, to keep them seperated from my other breeds.
How long of a run should a pair have?
should I use dirt, sand, pine chips, hay r rubber mats for ground cover?

How much space do they need for their tails?
How do u transport them to & from shows?

Yes...I have Alot of questions!!
Yes...I have read alot too....& got many answers
but would like to get more info from VARIES sources!

That would be awesome if you kept track!

haha

sorry about that.
I've been in and out a lot here recently and miss a lot of these.
Most all that has been covered a lot threw this thread. I know it's a ton or reading though to go back threw and find it all, but it's in there several times from several different breeders.
But to make it easier

Here's the bulk of it.

State wise, no one knows except those who are in TX for that. You will need NPIP papers though for any sanctioned show. It's usually free or for a very low price to get certified. Amanda is in Texas so she may be able to tell you other specifics on that.

Shipped eggs are always a risk, you may get everyone to hatch, you may not get squat, all depends on how ruff they were treated. A good average to HOPE for is 50%, but that's just a hoping game there.

To be kept, they dont need a lot of space, no more than any other breed does. I keep 3-8 bantam sized breeders in 4 x 12 runs.

The tail trick is where the differences come in. It is always best for a show male to keep it in a pen by itself. Other birds stepping on it are the biggest breakers of tail out there.

Dry pens are a must reguardless of what's on the ground.

High roost are nice too.

a sand bed covered with fine wood chips or hay works well. I use hay just cause it's cheap and easy to find, though it can get tangled at times. I dont show so it doesnt bother me too much to loose a few feathers.

Keep a good roof over the entire pen is a must, wet muddy feather break easy.

That's about it I think
