Post Phoenix Pics Please

haha

sorry about that.
I've been in and out a lot here recently and miss a lot of these.
Most all that has been covered a lot threw this thread. I know it's a ton or reading though to go back threw and find it all, but it's in there several times from several different breeders.
But to make it easier

Here's the bulk of it.

State wise, no one knows except those who are in TX for that. You will need NPIP papers though for any sanctioned show. It's usually free or for a very low price to get certified. Amanda is in Texas so she may be able to tell you other specifics on that.

Shipped eggs are always a risk, you may get everyone to hatch, you may not get squat, all depends on how ruff they were treated. A good average to HOPE for is 50%, but that's just a hoping game there.

To be kept, they dont need a lot of space, no more than any other breed does. I keep 3-8 bantam sized breeders in 4 x 12 runs.

The tail trick is where the differences come in. It is always best for a show male to keep it in a pen by itself. Other birds stepping on it are the biggest breakers of tail out there.

Dry pens are a must reguardless of what's on the ground.

High roost are nice too.

a sand bed covered with fine wood chips or hay works well. I use hay just cause it's cheap and easy to find, though it can get tangled at times. I dont show so it doesnt bother me too much to loose a few feathers.

Keep a good roof over the entire pen is a must, wet muddy feather break easy.

That's about it I think
1st of all....THANX!! for respondin!

Of course, I have already read this "BOOK" thread & others....also chatted with Amanda & she has told me alot...she is very knowledgable of these birds!...& has been Amazin with explaining certain things to my daughter.
but also know..theres alot of differences between one breeder/caretaker to another.

(Im in construction....even though I have built hospitals, nukes, varies buildin plants for over 25 years....theres ALWAYS a better way...an eazier way...a different way.....rather its small r big!!)

When sum1 wants to learn bout sumthin....u dont just get info from one source....u go to ALL & Every source u can get ur hands on!!...lol

& I just added U to my list of Sources!!....lol

So on that note!!....what do they eat???

I feed my flock a mixer....layin pellets, corn scratch & crushed oyster shells.
I put it in a big barrel & let my daughter roll it all over the place...lol

I also give them as treats...Frozen cantalope, watermelon, bananas, tomatoes, honey dew melons & cucmbers....& at barn temp...meal worms, grasshopers, crickets & beetles!

Is all that ok for them too??.....Or do I need to get sumthin "special" for the Phoenix breed??

Thanx for the info....& Yes, still want more!! :D

diet sounds fine, better than most do. No sure how hi of percentage Amandas birds are, but some of the non molters with higher onagadori blood in them dont take to corn or any gluten based grain for that matter. They cant process it and over time it builds up in them and can kill them. I dont think hers are hi enough to worry about that, but she could answer that better knowing her birds personally. Normal phoenix have no isses with any of this and can be fed any normal chicken feed.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, will be happy to answer

I have all known lines in the States here.. Including David's line.. They all eat corn and are fine.. I don't feed a lot of grain and prefer a mix of bird seed, mealy worms, hulled sunflower seeds, and fresh veggies.. But the yard birds get scratch, and gamebird starter, and chick starter as well and do fine.. Also been known to feed catfish feed (which has corn) and boiled eggs.. They really aren't that hard or demanding as far as feed goes..

onagadori originate from Japan, Brown rice is about all they had over there back in the day, so the breed never really had it to eat. There for their digestive system was designed a bit different than other birds, same with ohiki and other breeds from the area. Brwon rice and fish were the main thing they had over there. It's just one of those things that time and habitate developed.

Outside of true high percentage birds though you wont have an issue. Most non molters here honestly have so little onagadori in them that it doesnt even matter.
David Rogers has a group going that are the closest to pure you will fine in the states I feel. I have some from those and they get a normal diet and do fine. David on the other hand goes all out with his best birds that he is working with.

Same on the ohiki, most are bred well enough by Toni-Marie now that they dont have a gluten issue, then there are some on them still that have to be watched.

But seeing how you got Amandas stock and she just said she doesnt have an issue, you will be fine sounds like.
you can go to onagadori.net and read more in detail about them all and dietary issues if you'd like

This is the pullet I got from the amish, out of all his pullets this one was the one who had the closest "cockerel" feather look to it

Anndddd the cockerel, he has a lot of potential. Only 3 months

ok THANX!!....Ive seen Toni Marie & David's pix of their breeds & read their pages too
Have read about the Onangori breed & was just curious....dont think Im goin into the onogadori breed.
think their tails gets TOO LONG to take care of.....15-25 feet of tail would b time consuming

We're just wantin a few roo's & mayb a pair to show.
But know I will also need to hatch as they get older for replacements.

My knowlegde gatherin will b for care & showin for the Phoenix...but also mite get sum Yoko's & Ohiki's.

So my daughter will have a variety of breeds at the 4-H shows around here!

R the Yoko's & Ohiki's breeds bout the same as the Phoenix (as far as care)??

similar, yes on the yokohamas, the ohiki are more sort a like onagadori, they cant take extreme cold well and some still have the diet issue, but most dont any more thanks to all of Toni's work over the past 10 years with them. Be very cautious on ohiki buying. There's only 5-6 of us with them and many are in project phase still and then I have seen home made fake ones being sold as true ohiki so just be warry of it.
There will be some coming available next year I think, if they arent known for them, pass...

To anyone in southeast Arkansas! We have some free Silver Phoenix hatching eggs available from the Uinversity of Arkansas flock. Preference to 4H/FFA student. These are FREE and must be picked up in Monticello, Arkansas. PM me and we can place you on a list. We are still waiting on our local youth to respond. Should know by Sunday afternoon exactly how many we will have available.
