Nice type and color! IF anything to improve on would be lower profile comb and a more level tail. The rest looks great. Both those traits can be easy fixed in proper selective culling of offspring. You have a great start!

Do you mean a "smaller" comb?? Is that mentioned in the SOP?? I don't have the SOP so wondered exactly what you meant by that and also I assume you don't want a "perky" tail sticky up...more straight out?? So...first you look for overall size and body composition and then zero in on the combs and tail, etc. I remember you aim for 5 or 6 points on comb? I won't ever show but would like to raise good quality birds for breeding and my own pleasure.

Outta 100 points the comb is worth 5 points. Yes you want near or next to no comb in an Orp. Here is an example.
This a breeding by D. Akers. He is one of IF not the very best Orp breeder I know.

I have kind of a funny blk orp story... I have never had anything like this happen befor in all of our years showing..We started cage training in aug for sept shows, the birds selected are brought in thier own cages and handled 3 times a day..when they are understanding that no one is going to hurt them and do very well being looked over, they get put back out in thier stomp pens and A frames where they sleep..they have pretty big yards to play in...All had done very well being handled so were all back out for a week...I went out to check feeders and wateres, and one of the cockerals had gone back into the pen with cages, hopped into the cage, he was in there singing to himself, re-arranging the sawdust to his liking, cleaning his feet and singing some more..thought it was cute..sneaked back out with the camera and grabbed a few pics, he stayed in there for about an hour then left back outside in the grass.

this is the cockeral

i sneaked out to take a couple of pics , he was just singing away in there.
you can see the doors are wide open.

that doug acre is a must have on the list of top breeders..have you seen his australorps? won some big shows with that cockeral , pulled him out of nationals because he molted out the middle of his tail..man he has nice birds.. I personally think hes a genious, they way he used those german new hampshires to his advantage, won nationals with the delaware pullet he created using them, perfect tail barring and shape..we had a pic of her blew me away..I know hes a busy guy always at shows or teaching or something

And Doug Mentor is Jack Patterson. Jack is another brilliant poultry mind. He is an ole stringman. Up till this year Jack was in charge of filling cages at our Indiana State Fair Poultry Show. last year Doug won that show with his Australorp. He was even surprised because that Aussie beat his best Buff Orp

I recently did some serious culling in the rooster yard. I held on to a few boys in my opinion honestly deserve to have a flock of their own. This is a picture of one of the boys.. he is 3/4 English, hatched out Feb 2011, and he is BIG! Anyone interested in him is welcome to PM me.
Thank you,
