I have plans only to keep the best hens this yr to breed... for I have purchased 100% English chicks from Joy and there are a few boys in the lot. I still have one black and two blue roos I got from Bama last yr. The black boy is in the roo yard as well because I have a FLOOD of black hens in the coop.

Jeremy... That hen is to die for

IMO it all depends on the head roo. If he encourages foraging far and wide, his loyal followers will be right there beside him. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Tammy. Yes, this helps because this is what I suspected. However, I would be interested how good the Orps, as a breed, forage. In other words, where does the Orp place in the chickendom of foragers?

In all of the breeds and varieties I have owned...my partridge rocks and white leghorns are the best. Everyone after that is just ok.

That would be nice.. well tell your husband you will be taking the LONNNG way home from FLorida next yr.. lol OH and be sure he watches those TV specials about the imported exotic pets (Pythons, Boas, Tagu lizards and such) that have been breeding in the wild and showing up in peoples backyards... Yep.. and them brown spiders that jump, bite, and your skin tissue rots out. OH almost forgot the Killer Bees!!!! I had forgotten about the roaches... until I had to make a trip down to FL last yr because my father was terminally ill. We stayed at hotel on the beach for 100.00 a night.. got the cheaper rate cuz of the length of the stay. Woke up the first morning to find a ROACH staring back at me from inside a cabinet.<<< NO kiddin.. I took a picture of him.
Here he is in all his glory! Do take in mind.. these guys given the chance ... will come home in your dirty clothes, suitcase, and purse.

yes , like all chickens if they experience a lot of predetor attacks they will stay closer to home we fence an orchard..its fantastic, they gobble up everything from japanese beetles to gypsy moths , its a win win letting them forage but you do need to provide some protection or your flock will dwindle quickly..they also brouse a lot of plants we just have to go around about 2 X a year and mow behind them the weeds they dont really like to eat. the birds are healthiert more robust that way.

here are some australorps jyst let out to brouse in the morning, they are now joined by blk orps..they get around beleive me, aussies a little too far away sometimes. that is why we fenced where we wanted to steer them for pest patrol.

I didn't realize that you were a native Floridian! Well...I lived there for 30 years....from college graduation to retirement...then skidaddled back to my native Michigan. However....hubby really hates the cold here.

(loves the rest of Michigan...just not from FEb-April) I had my share of sweat and heat (worked outside as a Physical ed. teacher), roaches, alligators, snakes, nematodes, mold....etc.

We finished our Travel trailer transformed into chicken coop on wheels just yesterday!! Hubby won't let me haul the chickens to Florida for the 3 months but I have 3 friends that have offered to take care of them while we are gone (so back ups for future years). I have the coop arranged so they will not have to go inside (they all have chickens and I don't want any contamination into my mobil coop to expose any thing of theirs although their flocks LOOK healthy). I realize that Mareks is airborne and my flock could still get dander from the caretakers clothing but at present these friends chickens are healthy and it is better than selling my flock). I plan on having one friend do this for one season, then the next friend for the next season (assuming it worked out ok) and hopefully it will work out.

I did this several years ago and it worked out ok. I will be a worrier during Feb-April but it is better than moving BACK to Florida full time OR not having chickens. So....wish me luck.

Mine go far and wide and often to the neighbors property, which freaks me out because they have dogs. I have to get a barrier set up!
