I'm new to chickens anyway, but I'm finding the Orps especially hard to sex. I see photos here of hens with really big combs and wattles - but maybe the question is when they develop those? I have one 7-week old that could never be anything but a pullet, but 2 others that started getting combs and wattles at only a couple of weeks. I re-homed one that continued to display roo-ish behavior, even though he hadn't crowed yet. The other one's comb and wattles aren't getting bigger, and they are pale unless the chick gets excited. That one is going to get some more time ....

If there is a "typical" development pattern in the Orps (I have bantams) it would be VERY helpful to have a series of photos to refer to.

Getting ready to show a few birds in 12 days at the CENTRAL INDIANA POULTRY SHOW here in Lebanon Indiana. I only have very young birds to show. As usual my birds like to molt at the least convenient time. So, I guess my better birds to show will be aroung 5 to 6 months old. I do not expect to win a dang thing. But, I will still be there with a small army of Orps.
Here are two I am taking. Their both around 5 to 6 months old. The Brown Red cockerel has really come into his own in the past few weeks. They grow so fast at this stage.
Hope to see some of you there at the show.

This boy is from a 1/2 Speckled Sussex & 1/2 Buff Orp hen bred to a BUSTOFF scrawny Black cockerel from last season who I was told looked more like an Australorp. As many know BUSTOFF is 1/2 AAA quality Buff orp & 1/2 Meyer hatchery, should have been Jersey Giant, wound up being part Ameraucana and part Australorp cockerel. So about 1/3 of this Brown Red is Buff Orp. THANK GOD for having some quality bird's genetics to make him as nice as I think he will be. So, for anyone who has a Scrawny narrow butt hen and want to breed her to a small Aussie looking cock, go for it IF they have some good genes!
