Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Bill, what you've said is exactly true. What they are as adults is what matters to me as well. How they get there? Just as long as they do. A dog person was telling me that she didn't care for the developmental stages that a certain family of beautiful adults went through. Different than what she was used to. I figured who cares? I'm breeding for a mature adult in anything I work with. The juveniles are not the desired end product. With John's birds I am wondering if there might be something going on behind the scenes so to speak. I remember reading somewhere where the long awaited whites came from and I know that that breeder at least used to have some cuckoo. Wondering if it came out of the whites or was from a different project. But, someone else has started with whites so to John I say Good Luck and Congratulations!

I have a pen where I am using a Buff Sport cock. He is what most Buff breeders would hope for in a mature Buff. Nice type, near perfect tail and good size. One of the breeders in his line used White to clean out the smut in the tails of his Buff line. Now 7 to 10 years later these Buff Sports are popping out. Some purists would have a fit if that was happening to them. To them this bird is just another cull. To the opportunist that I am I can see the benefit of having this bird in a White breeding program. I took him to a Black to see IF he acts genetically like a pure White. IF I get all Blacks from this breeding it is good news for my Black program, and IF I suspect right these offspring may also carry White. A WIN WIN for my Orps. Everyone is wanting to breed up the Blacks in the USA. That is why you see alot of UK Orps to help in the type, and size. I am just using Buff Sports to accomplish the same thing. So who cares what these chicks look like. Use them for what your goal is. Making a better orp!

Thank You! Shaffer, DaveK and Bill

I have been incubating/hatching since early Feb, using White X White and Black X Black, I thought it would
be straight forward with the colors but it has been nothing short of confusing

The Black X Black was easy (black head, body, tail and wings) with gold\tan under belly

However I hatched one all white chick, three gun metal grey, several silver and believe it or not
black and tan over the whole body and all (to this point) turned into whites.

Not complaining at all, Completely believe in where I got my start from, and I agree the end product is the goal.

We have been in a long cold spell and 3 or 4 inches of snow yesterday, should warn up enough today that I might
get some pictures to post.

Bill........

This is for you........... I made up what I call my Fun Pen
wee.gif

I put my White Rooster in with.:

1 White Hen
1 Buff Hen
1 Cuckoo Hen (color is like a Bared Rock)
1 Black Hen (carries a white gene)
2 Random Color Hens (color being black and white) both with a white gene.

First 20 some odd eggs will hatch aprox the 31st of this month
Second group, 20 some odd eggs will hatch aprox April 21st.

That does sound like a fun pen. With the Black you should get a Black with recessive White. The Buff may come out Buff recessive White. Cuckoo will yield White.
First year I took a hatchery mix which was Black to an Exhibition Buff hen and got a Dun/Silver. Then bred that bird to Blacks and bred their offspring to each other. now I get alot of Duns. I get Brown Reds. And am hoping to get an all Red or Dun this season.
Now I am getting alot of neat and different looking birds.

It would be interesting to see if you got some lemon cuckoos out of the buff hen.

Just candled the White Orp and Shamo eggs I got this week. And every single one of the 2 dozen eggs are fertile. i know better then to think all will hatch. But so far so good. Just have to keep a good eye on the incubator and make sure all keeps going well.
