Or you could outcross to some Light Sussex and get there even faster. Again, theoretically.

I have some of these Birchen pullets which are related to him too. MAYBE, since it is a cockerel, I can try several different varieties and see what pops out.

The fella is a little bit frizzled up since he was not use to his new pen mates (some Buff Orps). He has a nice large head. I asked Krys on the Yahoo Orpington Group which variety would be best to take him too. She may awswer sometime soon. I would guess take him to Whites. BUT MAYBE also try him on some Blacks. Harry always speculated that BUSTOFF had Columbian in him. And I guess this fella answers the question. I could always ask Dan H and or a couple of the genetics guys on this site.
thats interesting..maybe harrys right, or maybe somewhere in his distant past there was ERMIN..i will try to copy the old pages from that 1800s book , they were shown at one time , maybe worth to see , i think they were in the very old standard..i wouldnt know what to cross with, blk or white..im no expert..it just tickled me that these poor guys were trying to re-create the ermin on that australian thread, threw lot of things together, a lot of thought went into it..they worked really hard on it but lost interest after a couple years because nothing like the ermin was coming out..yesterday im reading along in here , i nearly fell out of the chair..look at that ..those poor guys were knocking themselves out and it accidently popped up here..lot of the birds you have are out of very old show breeding lines, it might just be there was ermin back there..there are pictures in those old books of the ermin, they are in my laptop..i save everything..one way or another i will post the ermin section sometime over the weekend

i also thought it was cute how in that book they were adamant that these birds were named ermin, not to be called columbian..or anything else because orpingtons are royal you know! people are passionate about thier orps..in the book they have thier own section like blues blks & whites.

I will look and see if I can find that thread again, it has been a couple years ago.i was looking at australorps and wound up caught up in that interesting project for a while..

the book to look in complete with old pictures is standard bred orpington , blk ,buff, white, thier practical qualities , standard requirements how to judge them..ect..John Henrey 1857 .it is free for download to kindle, a section on cukoo and ermin..the first time they were shown was jan 1909 the guy took a pen of them to boston, cuckoo blues too.. they were activly seeking to get them inducted to the standard..with cukoo blues ect..this book and another give in depth color explanations

the guys wwho were trying to re-create the ermin were deperatly trying to call out a sport from orp lines, they were trying to not bring in bramah or coumbian probably because of research in books like this..they did use blacks and whites but the results as I remember it was a couple years ago were not impressive, they tried for a long time..

Aveca.......thanks for posting the ermin info. They look Columbian to me. I am on the road and will not be back until Sunday night. I will read it tonight, but I have a hard time responding on these little phone keyboards. I don't have the fast thumbs of a teenager.

Ermin and Lavender will be two colors that appear to already have a color description name, so it is difficult to use those two words to describe a color. (Columbian and Self blue).

Thank you for posting this. I think mine is far from being as nice as these. BUT, it can be a start.
