Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Thank You!!!! She actually started laying at about 22 weeks and lays about 3 eggs a week! She is now 30ish weeks and is a little less fluffy and big as we thought she would be but we love her anyway!

Glad to help. Oh remember we all have to start somewhere. And here we can learn on how to breed for desired traits. I have 14 Buff females. Outta 14 only maybe 4 or 5 are to the higher level I like. But the genetics is in them all. You can take an under sized bird to another undersize bird and get some huge offspring if that is an inherit trait. I did that last year when I took a SS/Buff Orp hen to a 9 lbs Black cock and they produced Harold and Frank. When I shown Frank as a Brown/Red at Crossroads he was rite near 12 lbs at 10 months old. Frank's brother Harold has thrown several nice boys. Remember Harold too is from these 2 undersize parents. And Harold throws larger and more Fluff that many would consider UK like.
Yosemite is a Harold baby.

My Blue program is only going to be maybe 3 hen/pullets and this is the only male I will keep. Still may not use him. He has less of what I like then Yosemite and I can always use Yosemite back to Blue to make more Blue. But he is another Harold baby and also has none of the existing UK BBS lines that are in the country. But he has that look everyone is wanting.

Not sure he does. He does have the color other than the red leakage, and I'm sure he is really big though.

these are really beautiful birds! And since she is a hatchery I can't tell for sure what her parents were like. But she is very friendly a fairly good layer, and has such a personality!

The black one is kinda cute thou...He does have a bit of a UK look to him....Somone told me the other day that a long time ago there were blue orps in US that is why they were added to the standard...but over time they went pretty much extinct...They wernt seen again until the recent imports came over ...I did not know that..It was my retired police poultry show freind..he said that he was traveling all over...he said he hadnt seen a blue orp for long long time. Pastor said same thing...

Some hatcheries get their stock from quality breeders. Sometimes they do not even have the breeds they sell. They have breeders lined up to take care of folks who want a particular breed.
Galanie the Blue cockerel is in reality a poor quality Lemon Blue. He does carry the Brown/Red trait. When bred, not all offspring will pass down that gene. Unfortunately I like the type, and size. And will have to hatch out more to get what I want in a solid color.
Harold here is Brown/Red. And I have had some males from him with no Brown/Red. Yosemite has lost many of his Brown/Red feathers. He is down to just one hackle feather. Either he is pulling them out or some of the girls are. Yosemite is the direction I am heading with his line.
Hard not to use HAROLD ONE MORE YEAR.

LOL They certainly are! Though Harry is bigger than any of them, he is a gentle soul. And evidently easily intimidated by them. He gets to be hormone filled, guess who he'll have to deal with? (now I want to give out an evil chuckle... but in his case, well, we'll see.) Just want him to be a Gentleman to his girls and not be overly rough. If he gets out of hand with them, I know they'll kick his behind enough that he'll learn.

Editing here: One of the funniest things I ever saw was my former favorite cockerel learning about hens. He learned darn fast not to insist with those older girls. So when watching them out of the back window I saw him often call them over for a "treat" then try to jump their bones. Took only a day or two, then I saw him do that again with the old girls. Old Girl ran over, kicked his butt, THEN looked for the treat.

I nearly fell over laughing at him.

They really are gentle souls..Thats funny about the girls messing with him,..Isnt it funny this young they are already showing interest..Boo boo is 9 mos or so and only just now showing a strong interest..I never knew I would like these this much... more like I love them...Especially the cockeral..he just has an amazing chest developing..and he and I kind of bonded right away......

.right now the baby feathers are falling off so not a lot going on and not a lot to look at ......but they are going to be amazing when the second set of feathers come in and they start maturing..right now they have been batteling 20 degree weather..stay in quite a bit by choice..the door is unlocked and open when Im here which is most of the time as Im working at home coding and transcribing for a while ..when I go shopping the doors get locked..cameras on..the other day I went to wal mart, cam back watched the tape, there was a dark grey fox proweling the fence line..love that hi def camera.

.Pastor is coming up in march to work with me along side Vickie..hes going to give advise ect...he was up once but he doesnt want to make any calls , too young , but he really liked them a lot so far..so Im having a lunch for him and his wife in mid to end of march .caught them in an off moment , the wind gusts came over like waves this day.. so couldnt get the good pose

Thing that bothers me most about that boy is his chest. I know that he is from your guy with all the different color genes. But the chest. Maybe he'll grow into more depth there. After asking all sorts of ignorant and stupid sounding questions (I assume, based on the answers) I finally was told that a black cockerel that came from a line of blues was best to breed with blues because it would not have the red in it. That red is associated with a "black enhancer." And true "blues" don't have the red gene in there. They have silver instead. This is why I pointed out the red leakage. I hope you will take my criticism as I mean it, and not as something meant to belittle. Lord only knows I've put up with lots of that. And anyone that criticizes what I post gets a lot more attention from me than anyone that just fawns over them. Because I'm here to learn, not just get complimented. Though compliments are awfully nice.

I was taught to build the barn then you paint it. That is how I am breeding. This pic was taken after we had 2 inches of rain in a day. The bottom feathers are wet. So he looks a bit different then when he is totally dry. The real truth is what he produces. Several of my mentors have told me they like Yosemite. And Harold is Yosemite's dad. So, just for that reason alone I will use him one more year. Sometimes you have to breed outside the box. And what you do may not make sense to others. Results is all that matters. For now, I will use Harold again. Knowing every hen I have taken him too has been at best a medium quality bird. So, I will try him this year with some of my better Blacks and see what he can make.

You KNOW I'm kidding!!! My gosh I'd hate to have a team of mountain lions try to tackle her. She doesn't call herself thedragonlady for nothing!
