Your Orps are simply gorgeous, Aveca! In the past, about 20 yrs. ago, I've had black, and buff Orpington girls who were delightful, big, fluffy, gentle giants. They lived to be 11-12 yrs. old which I still miss them to this day. I never had an Orp. rooster, actually never saw a mature rooster. I am amazed the size difference between your boys and girls. My! he must be huge...
I actually mistook three of them for a black bear one morning..was up in the garden and saw this big black mass moving along the fence line..I was just frozen thought boy I hope that isnt that momma that had 3 cubs last year...
Thanks Lualshannon..I cant take credit for breeding this group..several different people that did the hard work..I just fed and pampered..That big rooster is a teddy bear..you can see the contentment on his face..he was a 1 in a million..pure pet and lap dog..easiest chicken I have ever dealt with..Ive never had a chicken go jump into his own training cage befor, chickens as a rule like to avoid any of that. ..he would jump up in his cage and sing ...when he wanst trying to sleep in somone lap or beg construction workers for beer..Ive honestly never seen anything quite like it..
I was making 2 frames for 40 by 40 cages out of cheaper wire just to see how it would all fit....he went in and jumped right in there when he was a cockeral..I then made the finish cages out of thick guage wire..I wanted to make sure everybody had elbow room befor I wasted any of that thick wire..I was happy it...I had to throw a sheet over the back of this so the sun wouldnt beat in on him as he was always in there singing ..I sneaked this picture..Later on I used those test frames for shrubs I wanted to protect once I got the actual cages built.
My finished cages..They should do a TV series..when women build things..Sometimes it doesnt go well..And I get laughed at by construction team all of the time..I did OK on these all by myself and didnt ask them for any help..usually I get men snickering at me and my attempts at projects.
.I threw some sheets on top to cover them from the night time chill.
