Isn't it funny how they do that? My two blues are ALWAYS together, whereas the splash and black hens (who have no color counterpart) are more independent.

Exactly! . Here is a good example. Yesterday I took this picture and didn't notice it was two chicken butts! If they get separated they let out loud chirps until they find each other.

What I am pretty sure is a Buff Orp roo! My sweetest chick and always comes and hops in my lap when I sit near them.

Love your little roo. I have to tell you that every time I get a chick that I really love, and loves me...it's a boy! I almost know immediately now.

I will say this; I got 100 layer chicks this year and did nothing to really try and handle them as there were too many. One kept coming up and letting me pick it up. I tried not to get attached as I was thinking I would have to chop it, but it is a girl! And she is the sweetest chicken ever. She demands to be carried and stroked. Even if she never lays I will keep her until the end of her days. She has my heart. She is a Delaware (not orp) and I see this breed is quite docile and friendly!

I really was afraid my Barred Rock and Rhode Island Red were roos too because they were full of personality and character. Turns out (I think) that they are just a week or so older and were more into their own, I guess. They are both really smart though. The RIR really doesn't let me handle her. The Barred Rock will when it suits her!

But this little guy just totally runs all over me when I'm in there. Stands on my feet when I first come in. As soon as I sit down, he jumps in my lap. The BR jumped up today and when I started petting her, he stood up in front of her, like "No, I don't think so! This is MY time!" My only concern is making sure he doesn't see me as one of his girls later. I'll have to make sure he knows who's boss, I think. Sometimes, I put him down before he's ready to leave my lap just so I'm the one establishing boundaries. We have had animals of all different sorts all of our lives. Both me and DH. Keeping critters in line is uber-important! That's the only way they'll have respect for you.

But so far, he is my little sweetie. The pullet BO has her moments. Sometimes she's running away from me, other times I can pick her up and pet her and she'll lie there with her eyes closed and neck stretched out. So stinking cute! But I just love that little comb and the growing wattles on "Barry".

I had one very pushy little pullet. She was always the most friendly and most interested in me and what I was doing. Still is. She's also the only one who really interacts with the dog.

Awww! She's gorgeous! That's sounding exactly like him. Ha, had to change avatar! I don't trust any of my dogs around them! Maybe one or two under supervision, but I figure it's better to just keep them off limits entirely. What a cutie she is! And I love your coop!

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with it, though they've gotten so HUGE I kinda wana expand the run for them. Clancy (giant dog in pic) has very little interest the chickens. He'll sniff them every once in a while, but the most I've seen him do is lick on when she got loose (boy was she indigent about that!). His sister on the other hand ... well, Tallulah is VERY excited about them and I'm sure would kill them all if given any chance at ALL.

Yoiu know, I thought our pen and run would be plenty big for 8 chickens. We did plan for chicken math and it's actually big enough for 20. But, they get so big! And most of the breeds I got are large breeds! I don't think 20 would fit in there too comfortably! I think we will have to do a separate coop as I want some small ones - silkies - and I don't feel safe putting them together! They are going to be huge!

All our dogs are relatively small. But oh, my. They are feisty. We have one who will kill rats, snakes, whatever she can get. She's half basset hound and half dachshund. She looks at them and licks her lips. Meh. A half Doxie and half Chihuahua, Rat Terrier, a total mutt we can pick out any one breed. And we have Chihuahuas. They are holy terrors!

We have our coop made of hardware cloth and it's inside a chain link fence that the dogs can't get to. Really trying to play it safe.
