Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

There you go Cheryl, well worth $35. Doug's Buff's are thought to have very desirable color. This girl has a great head. Not as good as the bird that won best English at this show today. But, this bird is the sister of the English Champ, and Reserve Show winner. Doug said she had some broken feathers. Boy I am lucky!

Besides having some of the best quality birds, not just Buff Orps, he won Best Large Fowl American with his White Plymouth Rocks, has European imported New Hamsphire Reds (flat out the best I seen anywhere in person or in photo), he does Welsummers, and ofcourse LF Sumatras.
He also is, if your lucky enough to have him critique your birds, one of the best poultry eyes in the bizz. Here he is explaining to a young future Feathered Fancier what he looks for when evaluating birds. Like EF HUTTON we're ALL listening. What I really like, is he puts on each birds card what he likes and doesn't like.

WOW she is a beauty! I don't know much just what I like. I regret not getting some buff eggs from some of you. I have a very pretty buff lizzie but of course I'd like more! As I said before I think...crazy brain not functioning!! I have Lavender, white and black hatching 2 weeks from today.

Cheryl you need to post some pics of your Lavs and Whites. We're all about orpingtons on this thread, join in on the fun.
I hope to get my first White Orpington eggs to be sent to me this coming week. I have a good friend who has some nice ones and she said she would get me some eggs. I just did her a favor and I think she likes the idea of sharing and this is her way of saying thank you.

You know after going to a couple of these shows, not too many birds there are worthy of being called Show birds. Including my own Speckled Sussex. She is from modest hatchery stock. She needs size. That will come with good selctive breeding. BUT, she is no where near SQ.

There are lots of birds worthy of being called show birds, even though they've never touched a show ring. Just because people have no desire to show their birds doesn't make them any lesser quality. Some of the best stock are being bred by people who do not show for various reasons. Personally, I could care less if people show and really am turned off by people who brag up show quality..I choose stock based on if it has what I am looking for. I have found some terrific orpingtons from people I've never heard of before, but are breeding excellent specimens. These folks could certainly win shows if they wanted to..just choose not to participate in that crowd.

Your 100% correct, Thank you for agreeing with me. Today IF I seen one, I seen at this show at least 40 birds that come from hatchery stock. My Speckled Sussex included. Most were shown by juniors. Only 160 birds in the open show outta 700 plus were shown, and not by juniors. Which means our future with new and soon to be knowledgeable poultry fanatics is brite. From what I heard this show was one of the largest Junior turn outs seen in quite some time. Great news for the innaugural first time show in Columbus IN. Matt Lhamon, Tim Bowles were also judges. A very impressive first time show.
Just as you say there are great birds not being shown, there are lousy birds being shown. And it is not a slam on those folks. No way to know what your flaws are IF your new to chickens, like me, without going to a known authority and asking. The folks that do the judgin at this show are the best available and most reliable people to ask. Even though Doug is my competitor, he is an HONEST authority. He tells the truth about birds. And that is why he is one of the most respected men in the poultry world. Many bitter people who loose to this guy would not want to say the truth cause they loose. I am proud to loose to Doug. Braggin about loosing is not an evil act. This is why these junior shows are important in building character, and is why parents like their children to get involved in 4-H. The person who won the Show was a Junior. I never heard of her. I bet in 10 years alot of folks will know her name like I know Doug Akers.

I have 3 BBS Orp eggs in the incubator from Tori (Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain) due around May 11th, all 3 are showing excellent signs of development. I'm crossing my fingers that I at least get 1 blue pullet!

Cheryl she is no slouch. Nice type, looks like you need to take her to a boy with some width and you will be in the game. Cheryl your girl would win Best of Breed in 90% of the local shows in the USA.
