Chicknmama, we have a buff named Sunny also! Sweetest pullet of our bunch. My DD also has a beautiful 4-5 yr. old buff in a 4-H coop that's really sweet too.

This is Cracker Jack. All our pictures of Sunny are when she was a chick. I've got to get out there and take some more current pictures!

I'll be sure to let my daughter know that she picked a good name then ) So far our Sunny is the smallest and most shy but my daughter is pretty persistant so it should be interesting to see if Sunny comes around as she gets older. More pictures are always good

Sad news. The hen in this pic was found dead this afternoon, she and one of her chicks was killed by a dog.

I am happy to have two of her chicks in the brooder though, however one of them has a leg injury. It makes me sad though to think that my chicks had to watch there mother fight for their lives and lose, then cry unanswered peeps for hours before being rescued by me. I'm hoping they'll survive, as I have no idea how to treat a broken leg. Any ideas? My BO hen will be remembered.

where on the leg is it broken, generally speaking straighten, splint and check often. it will not likely be 100% but it should be good enough for a decent life. We got a hen at an auction once "igor" they had left her unsplinted when her leg was broken and it healed weird. she did fine for years.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

We've just started with chickens and have not lost one but I can imagine how hard it would be. Hope the chicks in your brooder survive!

So make sure it's leg is straight, and do the rubber band thing? How long do I leave it on there? This morning the chick was getting around by hopping on one leg. Thanks, I think if we do this they will be okay.
