.I bet we did get them at the same time last spring..what a small world!!.Hes a Stunning Rooster..Jody and Charlie have the most wonderful birds..I see why your proud of him..we sure are of ours...Too bad we wernt closer, I would have bought your runt..they go great in the Australorp pen. smaller blk orp hens = great aussies..if you use the big ones , you wind up with a bird that is too bulkie and big for the show pen, not beleivable..but the smaller more refined birds cross beautifully they often come out exactly like you imagine..
mr softie the rooster looks like a giant punch bowl in person..All chickens look small to me, even the biggest ones because we have German warmblood horses around and they dwarf everything around them..but when I picked that rooster up I knew he was heavy...the pullet, not so much, she looks like she might be heavy but shes a lot of big fluff, beautiful girl thou.. we get a vet check about a week after a show to make sure they were alright to put back near the rest...our vet was really impressed..she got on the scales with him and said 14.something lbs just under 15..and she said the great thing is he has the bones to carry that off..some of them dont.. just well balanced. she had been to another farm that she said had fantastic buffs, but she said when you looked a little more closley they had what she called monkey feet, really unfit for the show ring, but they were trying to work that out. they had the color near perfect but she said the rear toe is supposed to be placed somewhat rearward and thiers were swinging around to the side too much made them look like they had a hand. she said it does sometimes show up in the breed. they got a little too busy on the buff color and wernt paying attention to it until it got set. so hope for them they work that out. interesting conversation we had with her. Its so neat how you learn a little bit every time you talk to Chicken people and vets.
After dealing with Australorps that can at times be very protective, mr sofite is so benelovant..and passive..we had to get a better waterer for him because the sides wernt wide enough for him to get a good drink with his big face. the pullet didnt have any problem but hes just big all over. when we put the new waterer in, he was afraid of it, hee hee , but he got over it.Most entertaining character I have ever met. what chicken goes in and jumps in thier training cage when they dont have to and he was singing to himself..never seen anything like it in my life. Most chickens just tolerate that handeling, but he loved every minute of it.Im making one of those photo books at Kmart of him, just because hes one of those once in a lifetime charchters that you have the pleasure of owning.
