Dont you hate that? never had it happen here but it sure does happen..we are over run with chipmunks, i swear i feed more chipmunks than chickens...too bad you didnt have 2 more months because you could just plunk those feathers out and they would be replaced by show time..im sure the judge will consider it. if they wernt primarys you could remove them like an off colored feather and who knew?.you know how it is..you see a lot of it at the shows..people work for a full year only to pull thier bird out of the carry case and find a torn , ripped ect feather upon caging them up..you look at them and think how on earth did he do that?..hes a good looking baby. really nice for that age..a good debain and blow dry and he will look amazing.

Wish I was there to help..I LOVE that part of it, the pampering and getting ready...and I am a fuss budget about it..my pens look like a beauty salon come show time.. the cockeral that I showed actually fell asleep with the fluffing, must have been like a massage to him..

This is spice, just a hatchery girl, but i got to thinking today, of all my hens, she is one of the most consistent layers- not particularly friendly, which is how she got her name... but am considering a few more orps if i can find friendly ones, her hatchmate, Sugar, was a friendly one, found her dead in the nest box last year, and she was just barely a year old, so do i need breeder stock rather than hatchery to get the disposition?

This is a good time of the year to pick up a quality breeder's culls. Most likely what happened with Sugar is she became egg bound. Hatcheries are known to only want to produce prolific layers. They do not care about width or size. A good Buff orp breeder's bird will be wide and less likely to become egg bound. The first year I got some hatchery quality and lost 4 outta 5 hens to egg bound. Also IF you like to breed Spice look for a quality Buff breeder's cockerel. that is the least expensive way to build a nice flock for less. IF you have any questions go to APA shows and ask the breeders. That is why they have these shows. To help promote the APA breeds. And for those who have a decent hatchery bird to enter for $3 and see what an expert eye says. Ask questions. Do not be intimidated. Being new is not a problem for most quality breeders to help you out.
good luck!

Hey all, I just wanted to give a shout out to rebel yell here on BYC. Today I picked up a GORGEOUS cockerel from him, 100% English Orp direct from Joy, a product of her breeding program and decisions. I actually bought this guy earlier in the year, and then it got hot, and rebel yell was so kind as to keep him for me all summer long, while he just got prettier and bigger and more beautiful. He turned down $$ offers from people that came and saw him in person, offers for way more than I paid for the bird. When it came time to send him finally, when everyone's schedules lined up and the weather cooperated, by then, he had gotten bigger and cost more $ to ship, but rebel yell said he would pay the difference. Anyhow... he is a GREAT, STANDUP GUY, and 100% trustworthy, and has the most beautimus rooster that he sent and just arrived today. He is prettier, bigger, handsomer than I even thought, way back this spring when I bought him. Here' a pic of him getting a sip of water just out of the crate. (ducks messed up the water dish while I ran to the post office, lol. There WAS clean water in there when I left.) Anyhow... drumroll..... here he is! Thanks a million, rebel yell. I could not be happier with him than I am right now. YAY!!!!

I find most birds are like people. Some are friendly and nice and others are just not. Contact the United orpington Club President Don Chandler. He has some nice buffs. Or give Terry Britt a call. Tery is an APA judge and I bought 4 of my Buffs from him. he is not cheap. I think I spent $75 a bird but well worth it. Try to tell him that you are not in any hurry. Usually that means you will get some of his last to cull orps. That means better quality. OR ask Don to pick you some Buffs for you at Crossroads. That maybe your best bet. I know Doug will usually have a bird or two available. But get your call or email in now. A good duo will be all you need, A cockerel and pullet. GOOD LUCK!

I haven't heard back from Don in a couple of days, but hopefully next Friday (10/14) I'll be driving up to Don's house to pick up some of his Bantam Orpintons. I would also LOVE to get some of his Buffs. I lost both my buff boys and need somemore.

I see 2 boys for sure too. The others may be pullets if they're the same age. That one does appear to be a splash. Did the person use blue in the breeding or just happened to give a splash chick? I hope they turn out nice for you. Let me know if you need anything. I'm happy to help you work on them.

Terry's site is "TWISTED FEATHERS FARM" You should be able to get his phone number and give him a call. He is an APA judge and has great Buffs. Better get your call in now. He lives in Texas and I heard he lost a bunch of birds this summer due to the heat. So you may be having to wait till next year. Don Chandler can be contacted thru the United Orp Club site. Don is a great asset to our hobby and will make sure you can get what you need.
