Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Bill,
You may want to put your best cuckoo male with one of you large Black UK type hens to produce some cuckoo pullets for next year to breed him to. I am far from an expert and you should contact Krys the genetic expert what would be the best route. Good luck with another Project if only the Orps would become as popular as they were back in the early 1900's there could be a just all Orp show. Have fun will travel.

I did post on Krys's site. And asked what to do with him. Also wrote Marvin (nicalandia) here. Prolly should ask Dan and henk69 too.

you will really enjoy the reading Walt..if you have kindle or e reader, i posted the name of that book above.it is free download...he goes into some detail about why they called it ermin might have something to do with columbian was just then a color description developed at that time? its all in that chapter..good stuff
i know, im on tablet, i love it but its bugger to do much on
it just kind of ws weird that a group of guys were trying to call out of select genes and never really got it from old lines..then i peek in byc and lo and behold...there it isit was quite a while ago i followed that story they did kind of give up..they would get close and then never produced anything out of it..

when im able to get back on laptop, i will copy and name some of the other books ..the name ermin was selected according to the one old book because orps are just too royal..ha! but this guy goes into the actual details..more pages later..

Aveca.......thanks for posting the ermin info. They look Columbian to me. I am on the road and will not be back until Sunday night. I will read it tonight, but I have a hard time responding on these little phone keyboards. I don't have the fast thumbs of a teenager.

Ermin and Lavender will be two colors that appear to already have a color description name, so it is difficult to use those two words to describe a color. (Columbian and Self blue).

forgive that post..i have tablet fumble fingers.

buggers........i was trying to copy paste the ermine description from that other book, and poof it was gone..not sure where.

the page above says he used blacks and whites very strict about orp and no other type, he produced all whites his first year. but the following year they came out..he said the origional was a sport, blks whites and probably buff , wasnt planned.
tho
se poor guys trying to recreate that..all they got was a big feed bill and no results several years running.

Just sent a buttt load of pics of all my hens/pullets to Marvin for him to decifer what would be possible. Everything from Dun Splash, Blue Splash, Whites, my Aussie Layers specials who look extra interesting now after a molt.

He will eventually clean up. We're expecting more rain , YIPPEEEEEE!!

I agree, 10 years is still a beginner really. Found out the hard way myself.
Praise is only earned at an APA sanctioned show if the bird meets the Standard of Perfection. I will stick with Walt's opinion. Most posters on this thread have raised chickens less than 10 years. Walt's been doing it since the Civil War (okay, not that long
old.gif
) and has been trusted by the APA Board to chair the Standards Committee.

Dragonlady has also been doing this a very long time.

We each may have our own particular view, but when we get to the showroom, the only view will be a licensed judge's view. I respect Walt's opinions and agree that the bird presents in the photo as very poor type for an Orpington. It makes a nice and beautiful yard bird. But per the SOP, it misses the mark.

Here's one for ya Bill, this pullet is out of two Lavender Orp parents. You gotta love those wonderful genetics, never know what their gonna throw ya.

She is just coming 6 months old and starting to lay. Solid white but a few dark feathers, weird slate legs over white. (flash makes her beak/legs look yellow)

That is like those Aussie "Layers Specials". They were mostly black last summer and a few White flecks. Now their totally opposite. I did get Marvin to reply on who to use for my Columbian cockerel. He said for me to send pics of every hen/pullet I had. He is into making unique varieties. And should have a field day with what I have going on.

Red Spangled

My Silver Duckwing has been in a pen with 2 Cuckoos and have several offspring from that breeding. hoping for Silver Crele. The kids look like Barred birds. Just a wait and see process
