Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I have a question for you orpington experts. My daughters both show at 4H and we recently got two Orpingtons. I know very little about the breed and what the standard calls for. I know for certain one of the birds is not showable because she has yellow feet (but that was the one she wanted...so this mama caved), but I think one of them is okay. So my question is....what makes a good Orpington? Here is a pic of the two birds:

My girls only show for fun...so it isnt a huge deal...just curious. Thanks!

That's not an Orpington. Most likely a hatchery Buff Plymouth Rock. the other is an Orpington, but if you bought them together, it also may be from a hatchery. If you can hatch eggs, I have a friend with some nice quality Buff Orpington eggs available in Georgia. PM me if you are interested. She sent some to another 4H member I know.

The one in front in the other pic? Yeah I didnt think so either. The lighter one looked about right to me though. I did buy them together, and the woman had like 25 buff colored birds of various ages. I picked the light one and my daughter picked the darker one with the yellow legs and beak.

I might take you up on the eggs if they might be available in the fall as well. We have a lot going on this summer but they wanted to do hatching eggs in the fall.

Thanks for your input. Like I said I know nothing of the breed, but we LOVE the light colored one. She comes running to me every morning to see if Ive brought her a treat.

Consider joining the United Orpington Club and talk to the Prez Don C. He raises Exhibition Buff Orps and he could either point you in the right direction or may even have a spare cock/cockerel to sell and ship to you. IF you could make it to a big show would be great too. Many top Exhibition breeders go to these bigger shows. And a phone call ahead of time you may get to have someone bring you a bird or duo. I did that at the Ohio Nationals three years ago. I bought a duo from Terry Britt. Terry had Danny Padget deliver the birds. So even then you can get what you need with a little work and patience.

Good Luck, hope this helps

Not sure of any in Florida with Buffs, but http://meyersinparadise.net/ in Atlanta, Georgia has some. Also sent you a PM about some we have listed available.

Hello! I'm Amy. New to chickens. I wasn't going to do chickens but I fell in love with Buff Orps in pictures. Read blogs, stories...had to have them. It was hard to narrow down the breeds- I only wanted 2 because I would eventually like to breed them and stay true to the breed I've chosen. Buff Orps were my top pick and Marans were my other. The Buffs sweet faces and big booties are just too charming. I am glad I only chose 2 breeds- I can't imagine posting in very many breed threads. :D Anyway- I am really enjoying all the Orpington pictures!

Welcome to BYC! Feel free to join in the conversation anytime. I have Lavender Orpingtons but I used to have Buff Orps. I love them for many reasons. Kind of got my eye on Blue Orps now. I keep my flock separate from each breed. I have Black Copper Maran chicks that I recently got and somehow will just keep adding pens. I really enjoy having chickens and it is relaxing to just sit and watch them. Good luck with your chickens.
