Earlier this month, I sent samples to our state's poultry lab. Results came back evidence of Capillaria, and Roundworms, along with Coccidiosis. After receiving the results, two days later I
treated the flock with 2 teaspoons of Corid in their water for 5 days, fresh each day, along with Safeguard. I administered the horse paste, size of a pea for each hen for 5 days. I started the Safeguard a day before the Corid treatment began, so there is overlap. After treatment period ended, I didn't observe anything wrong with the gang for five days.Everyone seemed fine when I left for Memorial Weekend.
The day I came back, one of the hens passed that morning. She is one of our older gals, (6) so I thought maybe the treatment was too little too late, along with the heat.
Now one of the other hens is not really eating, somewhat lethargic. This hen acted fine until a few days ago. At first I thought it was an impacted crop, the night before I gave them some weeds which she seemed to enjoy. The next day, I noticed this hen was off. Her poop shows some signs of green, but this morning I noticed a string of blood, maybe two inches long.
The last two days, she comes out and drinks water. Kinda half heartedly may peck the ground. Two days ago, I gave her some oatmeal and yogurt, which she ate. In addition, I gave her some bread with olive oil, to move whatever is impacted, along with massaging her crop. I don't smell anything sour. I feel some grains in her crop, so she may be eating or not. Last night, her crop seemed the size of a pingpong, and I would guess full of liquid.
Yesterday and today, she's hanging out under the coop. As far as laying an egg, I think it's been over a month since she laid. I checked her vent to see if I can feel any broken shells, nothing. In the morning I find feces where she slept but very little. I'm thinking it's Cocci? I mixed 2 teaspoons of Corid in their water this morning. The other two hens are fine, laying eggs, eating, etc.
Any suggestions? Am I misdiagnosing the sick hen? i plan to isolate her tomorrow am to give her some time to recoup. My apologies for the long post.
