I ask the local PO and they told me I would have to take them to Columbus to the Bigger airport and ship from the PO up there so they would go on the plane.
I checked on shipping for someone else. They tried to tell me that you couldnt ship birds at all. I called them on it.Then they looked into it and this is what they told me I would have to do.They are a small PO here. They didnt even know they made boxes to ship adult bird in.They looked at me like I had 3 heads.

I think it comes down to the postmistress! or postmaster! :) I live near a very small post office and I ship birds from there. Ahead of time I PU some shipping labels, have them filled out, take the boxes/birds in and they are on their way. I'm 30 miles south of Lima or 60 miles north of Dayton. I know the time (time has NOT changed in at least a year) the truck will arrive at the PO approx. 3:45. I try to have the birds checked in by 3:30 and they are out of town by 4 PM. Most all my shipments have arrived within 24 hours. These little POs should not be telling you they can't accept birds! I have a special place I order my boxes from. Any questions, just ask.......beverly (near New Knoxville)

I don't think I'm going to be in shape to take on anything right now. I'm just getting ready to move, but as soon as I get into my new place, I'm thinking about getting some egg layers - LF and I'm really interested in the Marans. Do you think you'll have any around March or April? To be honest, I haven't made up my mind what breed to go with yet. The Marans are working on APA acceptance right now aren't they? I love the anecdotal tales about the egg quality and taste, and I did see one cracked open into a dish and it really was orange and really stood up. They need to free range to get that don't they? I'll only have 2 acres and I'm so afraid they'll cross the road and get hit. I don't have a fence yet around my property, plus I have no idea yet what the predator population is like out there. I know what I'm dealing with here, but it's different everywhere you go. I just get really worrisome about my chickens if I'm not out with them and can't keep and eye on them.
Anybody have any idea what kind of watch animal a burro would make?

Yup, the guy I got my bantam cochins from ships from a tiny PO and it's the same deal, he knows the time the truck comes to town, he has them at the PO right before time for them to go out, and away they go, straight to the plane. He said the same thing, most of his birds get to their destination within 24 hrs., never over 48. Mine unfortunately took 48 but it was because of a snow storm in Buffalo and the plane sat for 10 hrs on the runway. They were in great shape when I got them, very happy to be out of the boxes but no worse for the wear. It sounds like you've got some typical lazy southern Ohio postal workers you're having to deal. Complain to the postmaster, believe me the postmaster know the rules! I have a friend that just retired from the postal service after 30 yrs and she knows the ins and outs.
She would tell you not to put up with that.

You know I kinda suspected it was they didnt want to mess with it.I know The truck is there about 4:15-4:30 because I pass him on my way home from work. Then he goes to Athens then they are on the truck to Columbus.
When I ordered chicks in the mail they called me from Athens and wanted me to come there to get them instead of passing on to My PO.
The People at my PO has bought chicks from me.They know I ship eggs.I dont know what the big deal is.
They have got really picky almost every Ebay box they want to know whats in it.I think its to the point they ask cause they know it botheres me.I trade seeds, and they are picky about how I package them because they get caught in the sorting machine.
One day I went in and the guy through a fit because I had a twenty that early in the morning. He threw up his hands and walked away from me.He just didnt know what to do. A lady had to come and wait on me she said Give her change we can go to the bank.(Its 2 blocks down the street.)
Ive been a little intimidated by him waiting on me since then.

They can't do that!! That guy can't act that way and get away with it and have a job! Where are you? and don't get all scared, I don't even know you're name. Of course who else ships eggs and birds out of that post office.

OK, I think I can live with that. I don't do so well with the butchering end of things, so I have no idea what to do with the extra roos. I guess I can always sell them to someone who can. Once I've looked it in the face, I'm had. What is the normal ratio again? I think I heard someplace that it's usually something like 6 pullets to 24 eggs.

You know what is funny I got a survey about my PO about 3 days after this happened.I was Peed off and threw it away.I could have really done some damage then ,But just let it go.I have acutally drove to the next little town to ship a package because I wasnt in the mood to deal with them. One of these days they are gonna catch me in one of my PMS days and it wont be pretty but I WILL get my point across.
I have let things fly right out and then started looking around to see if I really said that and where it came from.
