OK, I think I can live with that. I don't do so well with the butchering end of things, so I have no idea what to do with the extra roos. I guess I can always sell them to someone who can. Once I've looked it in the face, I'm had. What is the normal ratio again? I think I heard someplace that it's usually something like 6 pullets to 24 eggs.

It usually runs 50/50 sometimes you get lucky.Thats one reason I like using a young rooster I have got more hens.Dont ask me why but I have noticed this. in my breeding here at home.

That's much better than I have heard from some others. That would be great. As I said I figure I should be in my new place and have my chickens set up around March or April, so I'll be back with you then and actually I'll probably come and pick up the eggs. I'd rather do that than loose a bunch of them in the mail. My luck it would be my pullets.
I'm going to call Mary Jo after the supper hour has passed and see what your steps for filing a complaint is. I know there is an official "path" that you can take to get that resolved and you'll never have to deal with that kind of stuff again.

This is probably a long shot but I'm going to give it a try. I'm going to eventually need a baby-sitter for our 4 hens and our coturnix quail for the occasional weekend. Just someone to come in and water and gather eggs for me. We are in Huron County and I'm thinking that an older 4H'er would be a good choice for this and could probably use a few bucks? But I don't have kids and was in 4H in Pennsylvania- not here in Ohio- so don't know any of the leaders, clubs, etc. Does anyone know if or what the local 4H chicken club is here in Huron County? Thanks for any help! Kristi

Kristi, if no one knows of the names of any clubs or folks, you could try calling the county extension office, that's how I found my sitter. She was a 4 H'er, now ex (she's in college). The extension office knows all the 4 H leaders, volunteers, etc. I'm not really sure what the relationship is, but they know them. My only problem was finding the listing. They were listed under State Offices as a branch of Ohio State Agriculture???? I think. I'm not sure, just try State listings first. If that doesn't work, just call the courthouse. That's what I finally did, I had to ask the main switchboard what their number was. Good luck. I agree with you, a 4 H'er is a perfect choice, and they'll probably stay with you until they leave the area for college or get married or something.
They're good kids.

I'll check with Mandy and see if she has any or will be having any. I think this is the wrong time of the year for babies. The birds I've got that I'm not going to show, I'm terribly attached to. I don't think I can give them up. They are very light blue and I thought they were gorgeous and going to be my show birds. Mandy set me straight and informed that I was wrong and told me why I was not only not going to show them but not breed them. SO............I have to turn my focus on the others that I also love, but they were not my favorites. I got this bunch from Mandy and they are such a wonderful, well behaved, cohesive little bunch, I don't know if I have the heart to break them up. They seem so happy. There's never any fighting, maybe a little chest bump once in a while, but that's it, and I love their personalities so much. Mandy gives her babies the best start in the world. When I got these guys they were incredibly well adjusted and have remained that way. I hang out in their run in the mornings or whenever I go out and I'm always picking somebody up and holding them and playing with 'em. I'm working on getting "rougher" with them, like the judges do. Mandy says I'm too gentle with them and it won't do them any favors at show time. I'm sure she's right. I've really been working with Beau, my cockerel. Mandy says he's shaping up very nicely (I think he's gorgeous, but my eye is skewed). I was being too "easy" with him, and Mandy showed me how the judges will handle him, so that is what we've been working on. (I give him a treat after we're done.) Hummmmm......does it sound like I like Mandy a little bit?
I LOVE her birds!
