I agree, chickens are my hobby and i love to feed and water them manually even though I do have some auto watering, to just sit and watch everything automatic would not be a pleasure for me. I have 3 coops all with walk in doors so much better.

I also used I believe Searchem Flourish but that's not a conditioner or anything or even for the fish, it's to help the plants, well, flourish.

Sometimes there is a fine line between enjoyable hobby and work/stress, especially as the flock size increases or if you have a busy schedule...

I'm an at home dad with three young children, between taking care of the house and children the hours left to take care of animals is very limited many days... I also find it much easier to find 'farm sitters' when I go on vacation when they don't have to deal with daily watering/feeding of every animal...

For me being able to go and simply give the birds a visual and say hi to the birds for a bit (this happens every day) is more enjoyable then having to worry about finding time to feed and water them every day...

We have to worry about predators from above as much as on the ground here in Alaska so MDH but me a predator proof coop.

Sorry, accidentally hit reply with no text...anyway, I was a tool and die apprentice for 2 years until i had it out with my boss who was only critical of eveything. I was young and sensitive but I've regretted not finishing. I spent the last 20 years of my Ford career as a CNC cutter grinder which was interesting enough. I did all the executive programming for a 4 axis and an 8 axis grinder. Tough it out and you won't regret it

I hear that. I enjoy taking care of them but there are days I'm just out of time or energy. My favorite part of this project is taking the grandkids out to feed them some corn and look for eggs. Last night my 2 year old had a bantam egg to bring in and he made it all the way to the kitchen and tripped. He wanted to save it but I explained it was too far gone

Anyway, I found a set of 4 nipples for $4 and a 250watt heater for $31 so I'm going to play with that idea for a while Still have to carry water but it will be much simpler to fill a 5 gal bucket than a drinker.

I have one gravity feeder but need one in Festers coop. I would like to have the auto waterer but it's a project for next year. I can water now every other day. But thank you all for the input on how to keep them from freezing. I couldn't use the heated bowls though. My Brahmas see standing water and they jump into it. They love puddles! So I will have to figure out what to use then.

I'm going out on a limb but the ones I've had don't get hot, they just prevent ice. I've put my hand in them many times just out of curiosity but always just Luke warm. I noticed a distinction while researching today in the description. The ones that keep water thawed are called de-icers, the ones that generate hot water are called heaters.
