There will be times that you won't be able to free range them. When a predator decides that your free-range flock is an all-you-can-eat buffet, you're going to need to pen them up. It's better to have a safe place for them ready, instead of waiting for your flock to get picked off one by one.I thought that was only if they were completely kept inside?

Metal fence posts that you use a pounder to drive in the ground and welded wire or electric poultry netting. Fairly cheap and easy to do.
