No high temp heat lamps no risk of fire.

I would never consider, not in a million years, using the clamp on a reflector lamp other than for holding a heat lamp up while I attached it solidly with wire. Your permanently installed light fixtures are a far better idea. Though I really wouldn't have any use for that either since the bulbs would be too far from any chicks that would need the heat.

Given how long they need it, a large cardboard box is a lot cheaper, probably free.

''a lot cheaper" IMO is something that has to be evaluated by the individual, as initial $ cost doesn't always equate to cheaper in the end... My plastic brooder bins have been used for many hatches over multiple years, easy to clean, clear so I can easily monitor the chicks from a distance, no worries about water damage and they are more secure... In truth I would almost certainly spend more on gas and wasted time chasing down cardboard boxes over the years vs what I spent on the bins initially years ago...

The water damage talked about in the previous post is also a concern... There have been multiple times the wood bedding in my brooders has got soaked by this or that...

I put them in the run and covered 3 sides and the top with tarps. We hope to start rebuilding tomorrow. I plan to build a small coop for the next babies with their own run. But this time I'm going to have some safety feature for the heat. That or they will stay inside until week 5-6 so they can survive any weather without a heat source. Hopefully this is the last cold snap and they will be safe. I just called and confirmed that the local feed store has chicks like what I lost. Well some of them. I will have to wait for a cuckoo Maran. They don't have any right now but I can replace my Wyndottee chicks.[/quot

Good luck with ur build and I hope ur chicks are safe and how old are they that u put in a heat lamp cause with my adult chickens I don't put in a heat lamp unless it's about 20 and under and with my 2 month old baby's they go outside in 30 degree weather

I had to put my 16 3 week old Valentine days hatches outside because my husband went crazy and bought 30 chicks. The bigger ones were hurting and even killed the tiniest one.
I had built a pen inside the coop for the babies so they could get used to the flock and vis versa. They couldn't get out and that's how they died. Couldn't escape the flames like the adult birds.

I didn't secure one of them but the other is secured with screws. An attack dog couldn't knock it loose. I will throw some screws in the other one now that it has been brought up :) Here are the pics again:

Notice the bottom one has two screws in it and it is very secure. I also like the design of that one much more but haven't seen any in stores like it. My wife found that one at Goodwill. Too bad they can't combine the two designs for complete protection. BTW, the IC enclosure is possible in a custom built brooder, I was just in a hurry and don't plan to leave them in once the chicks are out so didn't go to the trouble.

IMO both installs are dangerous, but that bottom one is a huge fire risk since it's trivial for something (dust/feathers) to come direction in contact with the light bulb while the bulb is well past ignition temperature...

I would never personally recommend a heat lamp in any coop no matter how well they are mounted, it's much safer to use a low temp radiant heater that never gets anywhere near hot enough to ignite things or even burn the chickens...

Please don't use a heat lamp. My set up was a heat lamp type heater enclosed in a metal box, sectioned off by hardware cloth. I even had it on a concert block slab and Wednesday night my coop burnt to the ground along with my 3 week old chicks.
