I remrmber when my dad took me to see the computer room where he worked in the air force back in 59. It was a huge room with rows on rows of big, air conditioned boxes and they decoded punch cards. He had to go to school to learn how to punch them with data. It was IBM's greatest achievenent at the time. Comodore had thousands of times the processing power and it still used cassett tapes for storage. Who would a thought

It wasn't much work, but the transfer speeds were very slow... You could literally read the text faster then it transferred, so you spent a lot of time waiting... And if it wasn't a local BBS number that was in your 'free' prefix calling package the per-minute charges on your phone bill added up real real real fast... Plus it wasn't exactly fast paced forums since most small BBS systems were in peoples houses using a 2nd phone line and you had to keep calling back until you actually got through then wait hours if not days for a single reply since only one person could be online at a time unless they had multiple phone lines at their house...

So it really would have been a pain to share cat or chicken videos back then.

LOL, computers back then didn't even play videos or display pictures by any practical means, you only had green, amber or white depending on your monitor Then everyone got excited when PCs like the Apple // and Commodore rolled out with a whopping 16 colors!!!

So what sort of forums was it? Or was this for talking to friends or?

They were not so much forums, more like the name implied Bulletin Board Systems, you just left messages in a very crude forum.. Topic varied by the BBS you dialed into, and if you were lucky the SYSOP (system operator) was at the keyboard and you could live chat...

This is an example of a pretty elaborate one, most BBS in the day were even more basic... Pay attention to the speed the text flows and realize this guy is using a 2400 baud modem, my first modem was 300 baud or 1/8 the speed depicted in the video and I was excited to have that speed because 150 baud was still the standard at the time....

yep in order to draw a border around some text you had to know the asci key strokes.... What a PITA..... took for ever.

I have seen picture of the Mona Lisa done in ASCI characters....(new avatar) even now ithey are awesome. Printed on a dot matrix printer....

I completely agree that people who are choosing to exercise their right to gun ownership should receive training, and learn the responsibilities of gun ownership and use. This used to be provided by parents as part of raising their kids.

It will be interesting to see if those who disagree with this position "flag" this post, causing it to be removed, which removes/eliminates my 1st amendment rights to freedom of speech....

I think the crux of the problem is back when the Constitution was written everyone who had a gun knew how to use it. They weren't considered "toys" as many of the guns sold today are. They were primarily to put food on the table, if you couldn't hit a squirrel with your muzzleloader, maybe no meat this week. Nowadays anyone who is 18 can buy a gun and never see the inside of an educational program. I have no problem with the right to bear arms but I would also have no problem with that right being restricted to "after receiving training on how to use them".

This is a privately owned "service" and they are not bound by the First Amendment. They can delete anything they like without violating any BYC user's rights.

My mini-coop for my vision-impaired chicken. The other girls all pick on her relentlessly so she got her own pretty house in the flower garden. It was small and flimsy but I reinforced it and added an automatic door opener and some major style and color. I think I like it even better than my big coop!!!

Me too though I started using deb a while ago.... Its far from my whole name. Thats what I hate about Face book. I seriously dont mind being called Perchie though.

You cant be too careful online. even with the most secure sites. thats why when I ask people where they are located I really prefer they just say their general area.... helps when you try to answer their questions.

Unless you are posting from a phone, you should at least know what a modem is. It is connected to a jack in the wall. It is the thing you go look at when someone in the house screams "the internet is down!!!!!!!!". Either telephone wire if DSL or the cable your TV signal comes in on. Unless you are so lucky as to have a fiber optic line, but that connects to another kind of modem.

BTW modem is short for Modulator/Demodulator

No you could do it. The other person could give you their postal address and you could mail them the video on the cassette tape from the camera.

Deb, with regard to hay storage/movement:
WAY back when (before bales, before tractors) people had hay hooks that travelled on an overhead trolley to move loose hay from the wagon to the hay mow (for those not in the know, pronounced like cow). I wonder if you could do the same to make moving bales easier. I know you CAN shove them but no sense killing yourself unnecessarily.

I am actually considering that. it would take an overhead rail system and a light weight winch to lift the bales and clear the feeder. give the bale a shove till it gets to her feeder then drop it down.
