LOL.... Squirrels are not the pure Herbivores people assume they are. They will consume parts of carcases in the road of that unfortunate fellow that didn't make it... They gnaw on bones too. But Mostly they only resort to an omnivore diet if the food around them is lean.

Here is Wikipedia on them. Read down to the chapeter on Feed.

We have ground squirrels here... they are considered pests.... only ones worse are rats..

There are LOTS of squirrels here in LA. Live in the trees. They ate through the metal coverings on my roof, through the fan blades over the stove and through
The metal mesh filter covering to poke it's head out in my kitchen!!!! Hired trappers. Got all the duct work cleared out and STEELE covers put on. They are NOT popular animals around here. The nice people call them "pesties" some call them "bushy tailed rats" and I won't tell you what the not so nice people call them. Lol

I am a pretty brave person. I trapped and killed possums (can't beat another BYC'er that killed a possum with a pitch fork against a wall, but I digress), but seeing the head of the squirrel invade my kitchen over my stove totally freaked me out!!! I slammed a small piece of plywood against the vent and duct taped it and made an emergency call to the trappers.

Removed a 6' black rat snake last evening trying to access my coop. Problem with the snakes is that once thy know the food source is there, they keep coming back. Besides, the kids love interacting with the chickens and I would hate for them to reach for an egg and get bit. Snakes are good for rodent control but bad for eggs. Haha

Here's mine…almost finished. I want to do some more trim but the hens seem satisfied. It's 3.5x8 with a 10x10 run. They also free range when I'm home.
I have 2 pullets, 2 adults and 3 10 weeks old(still in dog crate).
