post your chicken coop pictures here!

Yea, she has earned the name momma hen.
When the ladies have been out "free ranging" she is hurding them around the whole time, and she supposidly Has no hurding breed in her.

Little breeds like Terrier breeds, Dachshunds, etc, are used for finding small or burrowing animals - rabbits, gophers, snakes, etc. Our friends have a Dachshund that will sit outside the chicken pen and just fascinate herself watching the chickens for hours every day. Mankind has bred a wide variety of dog breeds for various jobs.

doesnt even have to be a sharp yank.... I have seen it on you tube. You can use the same method for rabbits as well...

There are also excellent you Tube videos on Chicken processing and the technique I want to use for meat birds is using the cone... I am pretty much incapable of standing for more than a few minutes at a time. Since the birds should be bled out no matter what placing them in a cone upside down covers two issues for me.... restraint and calming the bird.... as well as being able to manage it after the Jugular is cut... VERY sharp knife for that job means just a little pain then they go to sleep. There are knifes designated for that job... ones that have disposable blades as in a scalpel.

I am planning on building a processing station that is wheel chair accessible and built with heavy screens for but control... I am out in the desert where I have no help nearest neighbor is across the road and I am already tapping him to care for my horse.

Thanks for the advice on the processing.

I also wish to add my voice in saying HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!! To all our moms, moms to be, moms who mourn that life that never saw life and a very special one to those whom, though never birthed a child, have opened your hearts and homes to those precious ones who longed for you... Once again HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!!

Question... If I have a large open yard roughly a half acre large do my birds even need a coop per say? Will free standing nesting boxes and a simple in closed roost setup be ok?
I'll be installing the privacy fence and hardware cloth skirting within the next few weeks... Add a few covered areas and string wire with reflective disks attached over the whole yard. Will this work?
It seems like Mr. DIY has decided to build it later after all. Says it will be cheaper then buying one. Sigh... :th

This guys driving me crazy... :he :barnie

Anyway... I've got to get it set up soon. My momma is letting her littles run everywhere and I'm afraid that the small coop I've got is about to get VERY crowded.

Everything loves to eat chicken. Foxes, raccoons, bears, coyotes, owls, the list goes on. Unless your yard is completely enclosed, covered, and dig-proof, you need to provide your chickens with a secure location for the night. Chickens can't really see in the dark, and when sleeping, can't hear predators approaching. They are pretty helpless and defenseless at night. They won't run away from things trying to eat them. So unless you want to go out in the morning for chores and find everyone massacred, lock them up at night in a solid, secure coop.
