post your chicken coop pictures here!

Hey there PLFarm!
welcome-byc.gif
and welcome to the thread! Maybe that's too nice to house chickens... fixed up a bit it might be better for mom-in-law

You did say it was further away from the (main) house than what you wanted, right?

Anyway, keep us posted w/pics as you progress! It's a solid looking start!

That's why I padlock my coop. The coons haven't learned how to pick locks yet. lol

Yet... But they can reach right through chicken wire and fencing and still cause devastation to a flock... I've got a bundle of hardware cloth I'm going to run the 'bad weather' run. They will have the 1/4 acre to roam during good weather but I want my babies secure for now. Those stinking birds are small enough to slip right through the fence.

Sylvester, I have absolutely paved in front of the door! I was short of pavers at the point I took the picture, but I can't find a current picture that shows them.... Between the dropped tree litter (I live in the redwoods) and the litter the chickens have kicked up - you mostly can't see the pavers anymore, but they are there all around the run - there isn't an inch without a paver, and there are planters in some spots as well.

On the other hand, I think the girls may dig out from the inside!

Here's the fence going in - mañana is a bit urgent round here

The next step is the gate, and then I'm all set for the arrivals. The fence is mostly to keep the dog out and the chooks away from my fruit bushes.

The issue I'm having is rats tunneling UNDER the pavers and apron. I have to go out every day and inspect and backfill to keep them out (takes more than one night for them to dig all the way through, luckily!). I ordered a Rat Zapper to put out at night, but I think I'm going to have to break down and trench the whole thing, too.

Gah. I've got gophers tunneling like crazy beasts around the perimeter of the pen and coop, and somehow the dirt has improved ENORMOUSLY since I put in the bird housing, but I don't know if that's simply the season and time of year (did my building in August and early September) or if years of improvement are finally kicking in. We've had rats in the house, but not since we got a better garbage can. I haven't seen any sign of rats IN the run or the coop. Hope it stays that way! I cannot trench, period, so my apron will have to suffice.
