Our coop is done!!! It is an open air coop. The chickens love it!! We added a run on the side after I took this picture. The front is hardware cloth, There is a door on the left that now opens into the run.

Do you happen to know approximate cost? We are wanting to build ours like this but we're going to try to imitate using pallets and reclaim. If you have any of your info let me know. I love this!!!

I do realize that hens will lay for several years before they stop. But by replacing them every year (in theory) we get to enjoy having chicks, we can get a good price for the year old layers, and the buyers get a good deal on healthy animals in the prime of life. Also, since I don't have any desire to slaughter chickens if we didn't sell them, then eventually we would have a flock of decrepit old girls that lay narry an egg, and we would be forced to watch them die of old age one by one - while we buy both chicken feed and eggs.

Eventually the back yard would be filled with tiny little crosses and it would just be too sad.

For my family livestock can be pets, but they are still livestock. I hope you don't think I'm a monster.

ahhh, you don't need crosses. My kids paint on river rocks to mark graves. We have a corner of the yard fenced off so the dogs wont dig anything up. The rocks are looking quite decorative in that area amongst the flowers. Only 1 chicken there, the rest are from fish and baby birds that didnt make it thru our spring rescue mission.

Thanks, I built this as a starter to see if I was going to stick with this chicken thing.  So far it's all I think about 24/7.  I had dreams about different sizes and colors of eggs last night, even though yet to get my first egg.  My hope is to sell this one on the spring if/when I build a big shed and use part of the shed as a coop.

I'm pretty sure I can speak for most and say we all thought that to start!! Ha! But I didn't get rid of our small coop, it's great for all kinds of things, awesome brooder, sick pen, new birds before integrating, breeder pen or I used ours to house new bantams as I found my LF tend to not be real gentle with them... all sorts of possibilities! Very cute!!

I made this coop completely out of pallets and scrap wood and things found in the trash! It cost me $50. The most expensive thing was the curtains. (paula dean's country kitchen collection at kmart vinyl table cloths!)
