I know! My coops look so pretty with snow on the pine trees behind them too.

The kids and I built our coop and run over the summer. It was an old rabbit hutch we got for free. The coop is about 3'x7' and the run is 11'x7' with lots of roosts in both.
I only spent about $100 on the whole project. We repurposed a lot of wood from a friend tearing down a house and got the fencing for free over time. I purchased 5 roofing panels for the run and 2 gallons of 'mistint' paint for cheap. We put in a compost door and an external nesting box so we can access both from the back porch. Super convenient. I get free shavings from a local cabinetmaker so it keeps the run and coop smelling good. We have 6 hens, 2 RIR, 2 Speckled Sussex, and 2 Buffs. We got our first egg on Christmas.. My 3 kids are in 4H now and love it.

Very cool coop and nice project with the kids. I like how convenient your access to the nest box is from the deck. Very eggsciting to get your first egg on Christmas! My hens are young also. Got my chicks in late August. My rooster crowed for the first time on Christmas Eve.

Thanks so much for responding, we are new to this and have been researching on this site for months and came up with a design that both works for us and takes care of most of our issues. We have already learned a bunch from the first go at it. A friend gave us 5 chicks and they all ended up being roosters so I am glad we bought 6 hens from the local feed store over time. Wasn't as traumatic for the kiddos, and they all became pretty tame over time. I have them trained to scratch. Some days I only let them out of the run for a few hours to free range and I yell "Chook, Chook" and they come running to get their scratch in the run and I lock them up so I can go back to work. Super cute....

I'm building a 4x4 raised coop. I was thinking it would be good for a brooder, isolation, or even for a mating pair. And it's giving me experience for the larger coop I will be building later this winter. At the moment it's still a work in progress. I need to make a trip to the big city to the home improvement store for more parts.






I've been lucky with the weather. This time last year there was snow on the ground and it was so cold our water lines underground froze up.

This is my garden area and the new coops and run will be next to the garden so I can watch my chickens and they can watch me. My sanctuary area.

So after the great African style coop abobe I thought I would post my Asian coops and explain why they are the way they are.

The coops in the image are 5 raised coops 6x6 with a run of 6x18 including under the coop.

Our predators are mice, rats, feral dogs, cats and humans who jump the fence every now and then.




The coops are built on a stuccoed cinder block foundation. All lumber except plywood comes from our coconut trees. The thatch roof is nipa palm.

Above the foundation is 18" of GI sheet. It is a slippery surface that rodents cannot climb and is very effective on rats. We use a similar technique in our 200+ coconut trees we harvest for copra and coco oil.


The walls are the skins off the coconut trees. The outside of the tree is extremely hard.

The pens are UV resistant plastic mesh. We have a strong onshore wind and the coops are about 50 yards from the ocean. hardware cloth would dissolve in under a year.
