So Hubby and the boys got started on our "winter" coop today. It will be the winter home to around 30 birds, but they will free range as much as they want. There will be a small run/tunnel from the coop to the fenced in garden, but they will have tons of room.

Here's the start:

An inside view

This is the side where the run/tunnel will be so they can get into the garden.

I will post more photos as the job goes along.

Can anyone tell me how to get chickens to use ramp to a run?

Some of my flock uses the ramp just to go up. Some use it just to go down halfway and jump off the rest of the way. Some don't use it at all and just fly up or jump down. It changes from day to day who uses the ramp and who doesn't. Depends on their "moods"

Sometimes it takes chickens awhile to get used to something new in a coop. My girls didn't use the new ramp we built for a about a week and now we see one or two occasionally using it.

Don't worry - when their arthritis sets in they'll be using it all the time!

OK.......

.....I have one portion of the run not covered with the netting...maybe a 3x4 section.... I was thinking everything is ok for a this evening..and all would go into the coop to roost where they have been for so long..

Well, I went out to close the ladies up only to see the EE (mother..kinda) on TOP of my coop! (as in ...not in the run...!! And the rest of them had flown up on the window to roost! What the heck??? I reached up and picked each on off the window while getting pecked by the one next to her. Finally got the big EE down into the run and then had to get them in the coop.......they did NOT want to go..

Another AFV opportunity missed. Made a mistake of not putting away my ladder because I'm not finished with it..!!!! Plucked 3 off the ladder at one time..and I am not using that "plucked" word loosely! Would catch one and then into the coop.,,,took a while trying to get all of them in there. At one time I finally just held everyone in my arms until I could stuff them all in there!

To say the least,,,none were happy with me! But NONE will get to come out tomorrow until I have all the top in place!

I need 3 people to help me get them in at one time!!!

EEs and Ameracanas are terrific flyers but they usually stay close to the coop. The netting once it's up will keep the flightiness down. Our girl as a pullet loved flying over the rabbit fence into the garden or on top of the coop or across the backyard. We had to gently go up to her and gently lift her off the roof of the coop - after a week of moving her slowly off she caught on that it was not a place we wanted her and she never flew up there again - we didn't chase her. Same when she got into the garden section we just slowly walked behind her to show her the gate and after a couple weeks figured that the fence meant she had to stay on HER side of it. EEs and Amers are smart and even though they are the sweetest birds they have an independent streak - the good thing is that with our patience they are smart enough to catch on to where they must stay. EEs and Amers are independent thinkers so training them takes just a tad more patience but the reward in seeing them catch on to the "rules" of the yard is wonderful.

Hope you manage everything ok. Our day was over 100 degrees today!

:lau Funny picture you paint for me! LOL  Actually grass is already beginning to grow up thru the wiring.  I have been working on it all summer (by myself) !!:barnie

I've been working on my bigger 4'x8' coop myself as well... Only problem... MY HUSBAND KEEPS TAKING IT APART!!!! :barnie

Ours sure wasn't as hot as yours...haven't looked but was supposed to have been in the lower 90's...the humidity out here is so bad! Bugs are super bad!

My EE is just at the age where she is almost laying.. She is so so sweet! But because all of the others are so much younger, she acts as the mother/protector of the others.,and they follow her.,,even up there if they could. ..I'll sure have to watch her. Don't know how to get them used to going back into the coop! Will turn the light on and see if the will leave the dusk and go inside.....First thing after church/lunch,,,the last piece of netting will be up and the ladder will be put away,,

will also be working on ripping some boards to secure the different levels of wire... got so much to do!
