Awwwww... My girls are in honeydew heaven right now... I cut a honey due and cantaloupe up last night and saved the guts.... They are now being enjoyed by my feathered friends.....

happy chickens yeah!!!! Now... My question... Can I give them the rinds off of those fruits as well and what about pineapple? I'm going to grab a head of cabbage to hang up later today for them to play with.... I think they are going through a mini-molt so I'm trying to up their vitamin and protein intake to help them along...

And you can refrigerate and or freeze the melon to preserve it and the chickens like the cold melon on hot days.
My girls love bananas, warm wet oatmeal, apples, grapes, plain yogurt, shredded carrots, cabbage and other greens & lettuces. Oh and I almost forgot its my girls favorite treat every few days or so I give them each 3-6 insect larva that infest compost. I often say my Chickens eat better then I do. I am afraid my chickens have become spoiled they like there food in smaller slices so they can eat it easier when the lettuce is in big chunks they kinda give me a upset look and it takes them longer to eat it all.

Ive always been told never to give your chickens citrus fruit so pineapple is a quandary for me because even tho Pineapple is a fruit and super high in citric acids, it is not a citrus fruit. So I am not 100% sure if you can give your chicken pineapple but I would not take the risk.

Here is a list on what you can feed your chickens. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens

I hope this comment helps, and I look forward to hearing how much your chickens liked the hung cabbage.

I READ THAT SOME FRUIT SEEDS ARE BEST NOT SERVED UP TO CHICKENS EITHER LIKE APPLE, PEAR, ETC AND DEFINITELY NO CITRUS FRUITS. THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF PLANTS/SEEDS/FRUITS THAT ARE TOXIC: http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html#P
I'M ALSO DISAPPOINTED THAT I CAN'T PLANT SOME BULB FLOWERS AROUND CHICKENS EITHER. I'LL HAVE TO STICK WITH THORNY ROSE OR BERRY BUSHES WHICH ARE SAFE.

Apples and pears are fine for chickens if they don't eat the seeds, but yes you are correct about citrus fruit.
The reason you read anything about pears and apples is because there seeds contain poisons that if consumed in bulk can harm the chickens here is a link on the information

Maybe on that website you linked you read about the "Podophyllum peltatum", commonly called May Apple but that is not what most people mean when they refer to the word Apple.

I wish my chickens would eat the apple, pear, fruits but all they want are the toxic seeds! Silly girls so I don't bother getting those fruits unless we eat them ourselves. Our girls are picky about their favourite foods and Mom on the farm said chickens eat what their body needs. But I don't tempt fate and don't bother with the toxics when there are so many beneficial produce to feed them instead.

Hi, I have been lurking here a long time studying different chicken related items for our farm. We just finished building our first mobile chicken coop incorporating many ideas that I found here. It's built from an old 20' tow behind recreational trailer.

Here's what it looked like today when we put the birds in:

Here's a write up of how we built it: http://scottishthistlefarm.com/today-we-christened-der-bob-haus/

It's called "der Bob Haus" because our youngest calls all chickens, "Bob!" and there's an Octoberfest celebration in town. :)

Next steps involve reusing the old water storage tank & some gutter to make a rain capture watering system and adding some small solar panels to power heat lamps/fans for climate control.

Thanks to all of you who shared ideas that we promptly jumped on. :)

I would not give them pineapple. I give them the melons, also smaller portions at a time, they eat it off the rind, mine don't eat the rind. I give then cantaloupe guts, it is a natural wormer.
