I have the ~100 year old shed part of a ~160 year old barn over it. Boy was THAT a lot of work .... for someone else!

No problem in cold, still works fine at -20F. I can see where freezing rain could glue it shut or a dump of snow could keep it from opening since it opens out. Of course freezing rain could keep any unprotected chicken door from opening. I think I would build a little 3 sided roofed "porch" in front of the chicken door (auto or not) if my coop were not in the barn. Or, if it opens to a run, cover several feet of the run where the door comes out.

I would get the photo sensor if it is safe for your chickens to be out of the coop on their own during daylight hours. Otherwise you will end up having to reprogram the door as the number of hours of light changes through the year. It is only $15 and there would be no extra shipping cost if you get it at the same time as the door. I didn't do that and wish I had. Got it last year and it works great.

I want to keep my chickens inside a little longer in the morning than when the sun comes up I figured I would let them out at about 7:30-8 in the morning this way no complaints about my rooster crowing in the early morning. That's why I didn't go with the photo sensor. It was up in the air between the pullet shut door and the foy's automatic door which is strictly done by sensing sunset and sunrise. But as I said I don't want them out at first crack of dawn. I wish the pullet shut door had a more convenient way to reprogram the open and closing times rather than having to go out there in the morning when I want it to open and back out when I want it to close.

Ty we figured if we were going to build something we were going to see on a daily basis might as well make it cute. We have an old non working satellite dish we are adding and an outhouse in the yard to perch on chicken size of course. Also a mail box it is going to be super cute. We got two chairs already chicken size for them to roost on. Looking for a small pink flamingo for the yard LOL.

Sounds cute love the ideas. Might find a pink flamingo on ebay or at a nursery. I hope you post some pics when you are done.

For dust baths we use a combination of sand and peat moss and also mix in some feed-grade sulfur powder. We like to use the cheap plastic kiddie pools for the dust baths ... but also have some plywood corner boxes. The birds LOVE these dust baths, but they'll dust bathe anywhere/everywhere.



We recently needed to do a dorm room expansion for the cockerel colony coop. We just did a super simple cattle panel hoop coop, bedding goes right on the bare dirt. The door is just a section of cattle panel we self-hinged at the end, so basically the entire end of the addition opens ... convenient. As it is winter and we finished it during some of our more serious weather, we have it fully enclosed in plastic, but my original idea was to leave the door-end uncovered for more ventilation ...



The original coop is a pallet coop ... and we don't like that as much as we thought we would.
