Snapper, you may want to elevate at least one of those roost bars so the girls don't sleep in the nest boxes (pooping in them over night). They will normally try to spend the night at the highest place they can reach/get to.

I had a width from my other coop but just divided the space I had into 10 boxes which got me a little.over 9 inches. For winter protection I will always keep one box per chicken so they can cuddle up in the straw to keep warm.

I have a friend that has chickens in Alaska and uses no heat at all.

I live at least 20 miles north of you Kelsey and my chickens have never had heat. A couple of years ago I had a heat lamp over their waterer (long story) in a stall next to the one I converted to be their coop. Not one bird EVER hung around near the heat lamp. Not even the one that waited until the end of January to moult, coldest time of the year -20F happens. Half her feathers gone and she still didn't sit near the lamp.

People need to remember that chickens are not people. They wear their very warm winter coat year round. They can't put them on when they go out in the cold and they can't take them off inside, Keep the drafts off them and their drinking water thawed and they are good to go.

Oh wow! What a kooky chicken!! Haha assuming she turned out fine?

But that's very true. I actually wasn't planning on using heat anyway (too afraid of fire and everything hah), just making an observation about the weather. :) although I will say my mom still doesn't understand the winter thing lol
