post your chicken coop pictures here!

@Sylvester017

We replaced the shingles when we cleaned up the coop. This one had the same roll of green stuff on it. We cut a piece of new plywood and put actual house shingles on it. I dont want it leaking as it was in sad shape.

I scoured the coop since chickens has lived in it before. Then sprayed it with a vodka mixture. Then put 2 coats of paint on it and replaced the roof. Mostly I didnt want it to have something from the old owner that my birds could catch, plus I wanted it to look pretty. It has a Cow Tipping Zone sign on it now too. LOL

First poster here folks, been lurking and learning for my first chickens.... Here's my coop, themed "MargeritaVille". I got the main building from a neighbor who was getting out of the hobby, the doghouse was on my property. This forum has been a huge help... Thanks folks..... Oh, 154 square feet!

You have taken great steps to improve it! Certainly better than our first coop! Is the vodka good because of the alcohol content for killing germs?

Yes vodka is a disinfectant.some people use vinegar for a natural cleanser,, some use vodka. IMO vodka kills more germs. Vinegar is cheaper though so I would use that more often.

I don't think I will need 6 nesting buckets, so I think I will turn 2 buckets space(4-5s.f.) into a "brooder section" since that's what I will need first anyway.

How does a heating pad inside a cutout 5 gallon bucket sound? I will be installing an outlet and a light fixture with switch. I will run a cord to the tractor as needed for light, heating pad, maybe a baby monitor, or maybe a radio to keep predators guessing.

Should I give the chicks access to the entire coop during brooding? 30 s.f. (I don't have any chickens yet.) I am making a locking trap door to lock the chickens into the coop at night and it will keep them from falling down to the run at ground level.

Yes vinegar is a good narural disinfectant. And one of the safest things you could use to clean a coop with. You can soak orange or lemon peels in it to make it smell nicer too before using it to clean.

Lavender is an antiseptic as well as being relaxing. I used a mixture of orange oil and lavender oil in my odka mixture. You could put orange peels and dried lavender in vinegar (or vodka) in a jar or spray bottle,e amd let sit for a week or so. Shake it once a day. The spray away!

I would scrape off any leavings, however you normally do it. You can then spray on your mixture and scrub with a scrub brush. Rinse and the spray again and allow to dry. The herbs are good for thr chickens and the vinegar is non toxic. If you use vodka or vinegar I would allow it to completely dry and air out before closing them up in it.

The holy grail of antiseptic oils is tea tree. If you can get some of that, mix it in to your vinegar.

Let me go smd grab my book to see what mixtures woukd work best for clesning and disinfecting. BRB

Ok these oils are antibotic, antiseptic amd antiviral: CINNAMON, EUCALYPTUS, GARLIC, LAVENDER, OREGANO, TEA TREE, THYME

All of those oils could be gotten at a store like Sprouts or Whole Foods, or Amazon. You dont need but a few drops in a spray bottle of vinegar to get the job done.
