These are our mini hoop coops. They each host 24 sf of floor space, plus runs, under-coop space, and nesting boxes. Their best features are 1) their ease of use for the farmer, 2) their low cost, and 3) they are easy to make for your average DIYs (like us!).

This is the back of the coop. The farmer stands in one spot to feed/water, check nest box, and open/close the pop door on the other side. We added a clear panel to the coop which warms the birds in the winter when the sun is low. You can sew yours in, like we did, or you can use double layers of clear/opaque tarps, or you can insert a panel of corrugated planting roofing, overlaid with opaque tarps.

You can see many more details on these coops here: http://marciasomerville.com/farm/family-coops/

We are also revamping our old hen house, which had largely open spaces. It was an old grain storage barn with modular dividers. We've used the dividing posts to best advantages to create six double-stacked pens for observation, juvies, keeping track of egg production, sick bird nursery, etc.

This arrangement has unique feeding/watering stations (adapted from our hoop coops) that are 1) easy for the farmer, 2) savers of feed, and 3) work at curbing rodents.

Full details are in my blog post: http://marciasomerville.com/farm/new-pens/

Added polycarbonate greenhouse panel "window" inserts to both the coop and the feed room. Should provide protection to the birds once it gets cold. The feed room window is double-paneled ... just because that's what I had on-hand. The local Home Depot carries 8mm panels that are 24"x96".

The top trim molding is installed so it hangs down over the rough opening, creating a socket at the top. Panels slide up, over the bottom tab, and drop into place.
