Chicks born end of March, production red of some sort, I have 5 of them, I thought they might be laying soon! Not even 16 weeks (almost)!!! The most beautiful and most expensive egg I have ever put a hand on!

Thank you. I think it is a beauty too! I cannot imagine I am so excited about a little brown egg with white spots. I was expecting a blob or malformed first egg like some have gotten, but it is perfect in all it's little eggness.

this is our first egg from our dekalb amerlink we think.

and this is it next to a large "free range" egg from the store, already bigger and soon to prove more delicious

I think it was the production reds, got another one later in day, less spots and smoother but same size. They are in the same pen as the bantams and light brahmas but I think too big for bantam eggs and most of the ones I have will lay white eggs, so must be the reds. All of my girls this age started getting darker combs and face in last week or so. 2 evenings ago I got a feeling we would get eggs in next few weeks and we haven't finished inside of coop (insulation, walls) so we cannot hang nests yet, so I threw together a nest box out of a crate and put it in a corner. Neither used it today, but I just put a golfball in tonight so we will see. My EE are not 12 weeks yet, son we have some time, I have 22 girls of those.

Edited to add the light brahmas are very late layers, so I don't think it is one of them.
