I got my very first egg yesterday from one of my RSLs. I was actually fortunate enough to watch her lay it. When she rose up off of that perfect little brown egg I thought I was seeing things. Now I am counting down the hours before the next one.
Congratulations! I keep a record of who lays and the approximate time. That way I know when to expect the next egg from that hen.

My layers generally lay the next egg approximately 26 hours later.
I've been getting eggs since June, and I still look forward to collecting.

Thank you! I'm trying to do the same with my girls, but the current layer is really the only one that I can differentiate from the rest of the RSLs and once the other girls' combs and wattles come in I fear it may get even more confusing. I thought about painting all of their toenails a different color. lol

That is exactly how I justify checking the coops several times a day! I want to know who is laying, so I must keep an eye on them, right?

I knew I would enjoy having chickens, but I was very naive to the infectious contagion I was exposing myself to!
I love it!
Right now I have 7 layers: 2 EEs, 4 BSL, 1 mutt hen. I also have 17 pullets 4-5 months old. When they start laying it will be difficult to keep my OCD records straight!

I have to ask how old was your RSL when she laid? I'm waiting for mine to lay. She's 22-24 weeks old but her comb's not turning red and she just doesn't seem like she's going to start laying anytime soon.

To be honest, I am not entirely sure. When I got them (a little over a week ago) I was told that they were 6 months old. As they were not laying yet, I solicited advice from the experts here who told me that they were likely 17-18 weeks of age. Only one of them had the deep red well developed wattles at that time. Since then, they've really filled out and reddened up. I actually got 2 eggs this morning and have another hen on the nest as we speak. I know it doesn't mean much to hear me say it, but I'm SURE you'll get some eggs soon. Until then, you'll just have to control your inner chicken lady as best you can and try not to wear yourself out checking nests every 5 minutes. lol

We received our first egg about a week ago from one of our three Marans hens. They were 149 days old when they started.
They actually gave us three eggs that same day, one in the morning and two in the evening!
Love my chickies!

Three eggs in three days for my cochin. I thought they were supposed to me average egg layers, you know only two to three eggs a week. Now I cant wait for the rest of my flock to start laying. Sure would be nice to collect 5 to six a day! About every 26 hours for the cochin, just like someone else on a previous post stated. My kids love checking the nesting boxes.

My 18 week old Barred Rock, Meredith, laid her first egg today! She's been checking out the nest boxes for a few days now and kinda nesting in them.

Isn't that cute? It's soooo small.
