I kinda cheated and was given a hen that was already laying but it was so exciting just the same.

After you got your hen, how long did it take her to get used to your place and lay you your first egg? Curious since I have raised my chickens from day old and just recently took an already laying australorp(Onyx) last week and then this evening a RIR laying hen(helping my friend down size on her older birds) no eggs from Onyx yet - I'm hoping that maybe with a old friend of hers coming to the family will help them along - Onyx is doing really well though, she now will leave the fowl yard and go explore with my other chickens -fingers crossed for eggs!

SO I have a mystery egg. The RIR girl I brought home last night laid today for me. I went out this morning to feed them & I couldn't find her...checked the coop nothing, looked around the yard...nadda....look inside the duck nesting area & there she was sitting on 2 duck eggs! I moved her out & she went out to eat and go out to the yard. A few hours later I went to check again because I heard a hen making some noise(mine are pretty quite) look around and inside the hut I made for my guineas to hopefully use I find this egg

Then I go back and check the duck nest....there she is again. I went to move her & she actually tried to nip me then jumped out and started her song. She just freshly laid a beautiful egg right there next to the duck eggs. Yay!!! so exciting ---- now to find out who laid the other egg. I am thinking it could only be either my new australorp or one of the guineas - ugh I hate not knowing!
her is her wonderful egg with the duck eggs then one next to a store bought then one next to the unknown egg. Anyone have a guess as to which laid it? guinea.. australorp -I have NHs that are 19wks but they haven't been squatting and one still has really close hip bones. O and almost forgot an EE who doesn't really look ready(like the other EE,but she laid a tiny lil thing a few weeks ago)..so maybe EE egg..... Thanks all!

Our first egg from our first flock!
The honor went to Adele our Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock pullet!
My son found it still warm when we were putting some final touches on the coop.

I saw my white leghorn lay her egg today. She was sitting in her nest box when I peeked in and gave her a treat. A minute later she stood up and out dropped an egg. :) Of course an egg is warm when it comes out, but I never erealised HOW warm. Really neat.

Here's one of the two tiny little eggs we found last Wednesday near the coop from my two Exchequer Leghorn pullets. I was so excited that at least one of them is finally laying at 5.5 months old! However, we haven't found any more since then. We've scoured the yard, as well as the next-door neighbor's yard where they occasionally venture - nothing. It's been six days! Is it common for a pullet to take that long of a break after laying her first two eggs? Leghorns are supposed to be near-daily layers...

I had and have the same issue. My Cayuga duck laid and egg then didn't lay another for a few weeks. Same with one of my EE, she laid the tiniest blue egg and nothing since(a few weeks ago now) how ever to keep me occupied another chicken started laying, her first egg was good sized and she laid again today - However I can only guess it's my other EE since it is almost a white color & all my other chickens are suppose to lay light brown/brown eggs
I hope she gives you some more eggs soon!!
