My Cuckoo Marans Gertrude (Gertie) laid this egg. I'm disappointed in the color, it's barely darker than my other brown layers. I'm pretty sure this is actually her third egg. I found a broken egg under her roost and my mom had 4 eggs (I only had 3 layers before that) while she was chicken sitting last Saturday. Now I'm on the countdown for my Americana Hazel to start laying. She did here first "squat" yesterday.
Nice! Congrats! When my Cuckoo Maran started laying she had some light eggs just like this. She layed for about a month. Then took a short break... When she started again they were way darker. I didn't know that could happen.

Yay! First egg today! I think it's from the pullet my friend traded me for one of my roosters. She's a couple weeks older than any of my other chickens.

She's a Production Red, but her egg isn't very brown (yet). I don't even care! It's my first egg! Ahh!

That is a big egg.... Does anyone know why" first eggs" for some chickens are so small to start with and eventually get large, and why others birds seem to lay large eggs right off the bat, first time?? Just wondering....

My Pekin duck female is the same age (about 18-19 weeks), I wonder if it was hers? I didn't think about that until just now. It's exactly the length of a store-bought "Large" egg, but not nearly as fat and rounded.

My friend who gave me the chicken I thought probably laid the egg got her first egg the day before, so that's why I figured it was the chicken.

there were 21 eggs under her! i had no idea they were laying yet!!!!!!!!!! since i found them i cant find their current eggs!
hahaha, that's great! I had an older hen, about 12 at the time who decided to lay eggs outside under the Madeira plants and I found a dozen when pruning...couldn't believe it. She went back to her doghouse after that. Then last week, she decided laying under the work bench was a good idea, I found her sitting on 3...now she isn't laying. She is 14, so I guess she's on a break. :)

We adopted a flock of six 7 month old hens on July 6th. 2 SLW, 2 BR & 2 EE. So these aren't their first eggs, but they are ours!!

We filled our first dozen by the 10th. It took a little longer to fill due to 2 found broken, 4 soft shell and 1 dropped by our kiddo.

We have since filled an 18 pack and another dozen. Such happy little layers. We are having too much fun with them.
