Ahhh! She did it! Nina laid an egg, 3 weeks to the day that I settled her into the coop.
And it's perfect. Clean, hard-shelled, a sweet little size, right in the nest box.
A hen that lays an egg this great her first time is a really good girl, don't you think??
I missed the laying part (found it when I came home from work) but looking forward to the weekend when I can sit around in the yard and wait for it to happen in front of me!
Oh, this is the first time I saw this thread.
Here is my son Shawn holding a couple of our first eggs from the white leghorns. One was x-large size and the other xtra tiny
We bought our first hens ever on 4/19/09 - 3 layers. When we got them home - this is the first egg we ever had - about 30 minutes after tucking them in. Now we're raising 16 "little ones" - we're hooked!
My 5 year old daughter has decided that our BO is her personal pet. Works for me, since the BO seems to be terrified of everyone except the daughter.
Our other hens have been laying for a little over a month now. Butterscotch had not come through until today. The wait has been hard for the 5 year old and I am glad that she was home today to find the egg.
