I have three hens with wonderful next boxes made out of cabinet drawers. Im feeding them with layer crumbles, lots of fresh water, oyster shell, grit and occaisonal scratch plus scraps from the kitchen. They free range during the day. Im only getting 1 egg a day and sometimes no eggs for 2 days. I have one buff orp, 1 black orp, and 1 rhode island red. What else can I do? I was told they were good layers when I picked them up but maybe Ive been duped.

I would think you should be getting at least 2 eggs per day - our RIR lays every single day right now.

Explore your property looking for hidden nests - they are probably laying somewhere besides your nestboxes. My friend let his chickens freerange in his backyard and he had only found a couple eggs in his official nestboxes. He insisted he had checked everywhere for hidden nests, but finally, he found the nest with 21 eggs on it (all from 1 hen - the others were too young still).

If your nestboxes are in a pen, try locking them in there everyday till late afternoon and place some golfballs or fake eggs in your nestboxes so they can discover their "new" nests. Once they are using your nestboxes regularly, you should be able to let them out on their original schedule and they should return on their own to their boxes to lay (keep the golfballs in there - it encourages them by making them think "this must be a great place to lay - someone else is laying here").

Rivka, I apologize but I loved your arrangement so I copy-catted. Hope you don't mind.

I now have Nina's first week of eggs - she didn't take a single day off!

Because our hens were egg-catly four months old last week we were hoping they would soon start laying. On May 13, 2009 what a nice suprise, we were so egg-cited to find our first two eggs this morning.

As you may be able to tell from the photos one was a soft shelled egg (kind of rubbery feeling) perfectly normal for young hens.

They were a little smaller then the store bought white egg.

We scrambled them up and pronounced them as egg-cellent!

This chicken hobby is so entertaining and tasty too. Can't wait to check for eggs tomorrow morning!
