My first egg was laid today by my Rhode Island Red. I was so excited and it is also my birthday. What a present. I am now waiting for the other 5 to start laying

We've had a couple of really warm days lately, which was probably what prompted my Leghorn cross pullet to lay her first egg this morning. You can see it on the left, next to a commerical White Leghorn egg for comparison. Can't wait to taste it, and can't wait to stop buying eggs from the store altogether!

I know that's a whole lot of excitement over one small egg, but we've had a couple of months of no eggs at all, so it's really nice to finally have a hen start laying.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, no, she didn't lay it in the new nesting box I set up two days ago (what lack of appreciation for my thoughtful work!) - she preferred a lemongrass bush for that purpose. It's a convenient spot that has been long favored by our hens, though, so I hold no grudges.

Yay! Got my first pullet egg today!

I'd noticed my EEr pullet was throwing straw on her back and getting really interested in the nesting boxes of the last few days, so I was HOPING she was close...and she was!

Wow, what a fun surprise on Thanksgiving morning!

(Those are two extra jumbo Rhode Island Red eggs from the same nest box).

And this is my little girl, all growed up now!

And you know what? I'm not even a hint disappointed she didn't lay blue!

First dozen Buff Orpington eggs at 19 weeks, can't wait for the Black Copper Marans to start, the Marans are three weeks younger and they may be older when they lay their first egg though!

First eggs from my BR's, laid over the past 45 hours. One on the left is a soft shell, "ooppss" from the roost, laid last night and found this morning, frozen solid to the poop board, ( took a putty knife to get it off the poop board ) so I broke it open and it was fertile! I haven't broken the other two open yet, as I am not sure if I am going to blow them out and keep them or eat them....hmmm decisions, decisions....LOL

Pretty sure I have 2 laying now, as the 2 eggs on the right are quite different in shape and color...maybe 3 laying, as the two on right were in the nest box and the left one was from the roost at night....after waiting so long, I am tickled pink to be finally getting eggs

and to have them starting so close together too!

Here's a little laugh for ya'll. So after I had to put down the entire flock, I had a rogue chicken. My smartest one, an EE, hid forever. She has finally come back around and we are letting her be for the time being.

We have three 11 week old Aussies at the house yet (who have taken over the chicken yard) and I guess today they were really riled up.

My DM sent me this earlier:

The poor girl sat on that lamp for a good 15 minutes before flying down, even after my DF threw scratch down for her.

She never showed signs of illness, so she could still be a carrier, but my DF feels that he can't cull her after our 23 bird culling. She is now truly our "Pet Chicken."
