Our six-moth-old Blue Orpington hen laid her first egg this morning--right in the mud in her run! It's a pretty one, once I cleaned it off. We're so proud!

Although we've been getting eggs for a while, I got a pleasant surprise when I came home from work last night. For the first time all four girls laid eggs! Our Barred Rock named Condoleeza (named by my DD) laid for the first time since we got her. Her egg is the one all the way to the left.

I guess even though my yard is a frozen tundra, everyone is out every day, eating well, and warm and safe at night inside the coop.

My goal is to get as many eggs a day as Trisha does!

the white eggs are extra large grade A store bought for comparison. The row behind them are Selma's most recent eggs and the back row is Patty's first 3..Pretty good for a couple of stray broilers my wife found as chicks.

Beautiful eggs, my first from RIR's were like the middle ones.

Exciting isn't it?

Each egg comes with a thrill.

My First 2 Eggs!!

Hi, I'm Lorri from Georgia, USA. I don't know what kind of chickens I have (there's 8 of them). anyway I have tended to them for 4 weeks, the weather here has been horrible - last night and yesterday wind chill was 23 F.
Haven't seen any eggs - until this afternoon I went to give them some fresh mash and I warmed up some water for them (like I did this morning), and there were 2 eggs in their - uh -I'm from the city so, the place where they don't make a mess...
Here's the pictures and I don't know whch of the 8 chickens laid the eggs yet but I'm very grateful as I have spent a lot of time learning all this stuff and trying to treat them like I would a little innocent critter, but it was so cold and tonight it's gonna be colder and I feel sorry for them but the loose chickens in the neighborhood are always on my property because my chickens are so well-fed - gave them warm oatmeal yesterday - they liked that.. Maybe that's why they blessed me with these 2 eggs here... now i have to figure how to get the pictures here...

It's small, but it's BEAUTIFUL! I haven't collected it yet, I am waiting for my niece to come over in a little bit to see it.

I'm assuming it's from one of the three older Barred Rocks I bought last week. The people who sold her to me said she was old enough to start laying any day.
