I'm a total chicken newbie so I'm sure you can imagine my delight at Our First Egg!! The 19 week Leghorn won the prize for First Layer in our little flock of six varied breeds. My photographer husband shot a proper portrait:

I don't have a digital camera, so can't post a pic, but I am so happy! Got my first egg and it is a brown beauty. No more nasty store bought for this girl! Can't believe one of the hens had the capacity to lay in this 110 degree Kansas heat! I saw her (RIR-20 wks) sittin in the nesting box when I went up to put some ice in their water. I didn't want to disturb her, so got outta there quick. Then I heard alot of ruckus from the hen and one of the roosters. Went back up to the barn and Viola~

Finally!!! Not sure who laid this one. The culprits: My 19 week Barred Rocks or RSLs. The white egg is a large store-bought.

We are thrilled!! This is from our EE. All the others we very proud to announce it to the world as well. I have never heard them so loud before. I just knew an egg had to be coming with all that ruckus!

I didn't get just one but three eggs today they were all a light tan color. Two had small holes in them because they had scooped the lining out of the nest boxes and they hit the wood. This is the one I was able to keep.

ETA: I forgot to mention that all three were found in the nesting box! I always thought I would find them on the ground first like most of you say happened with yours. But it was a very nice suprise to find them in the boxes.

ETA (again): I heard a ruckus out in the barn and when I went out to check it out there was another!

Must be the week for laying! Both of my hens layed their first eggs yesterday too! I have a black banty named Lola, but a couple days ago I caught "her" crowing away in the garage, so I guess it's now a Louie :p

Anyone else get their first egg and then nothing for the next several days? One of my girls laid her first egg on Friday and I haven't gotten anything from anyone since. Everyone's making the effort with zero results. I'm hoping others are having the same experience and it's normal

So do they make a ruckus while laying an egg? I had heard that but didn't know for sure. Yes in this 100 degree Texas heat, I found 3 where they sleep, up in the 'balcony' of the coop (former kids playhouse), and after I got those 3 in the frig, (very small), i'll take pics, I swear, I found the 4th on the ground sort of beside/under the travel trailer where they hang...I did make a laying station and put a golfball in there, don't know if that helps, info is greatly needed/wanted. This is one of the most exciting things I have EVER done, am I weird?

Its kind of like growing a garden, when you go out there and there is something to harvest, there is a unique, egg finding feeling... jenn
