Got another first egg this evening, my RIR's very first egg, third from the left! Left to right, Barred Rock, BBR Phoenix, RIR, mutt EE/x/Polish and grocery store large egg.

i havent had a egg since it started to get dark early and interduced new chickens to our coop! guess i gotta wait tel lspring!

On Sunday we got our first ever egg, I think from Beetle the Australorp.

The RIR is close to laying too (it is late springtime here) but I think her egg will have a shine on it and be a little redder. The other two (Barnevelder and Silver Campine) don't look quite as close yet and I will be able to distinguish their eggs.

This first egg weighed 38g, no bad for a first effort - and she laid it neatly in the nesting box! She laid again Monday - but off the roost and it broke.

It's Tuesday morning here in Australia - and her third egg, off the roost again but this time I had put straw underneath it and it survived the fall. I hope she remebers the right place soon!

Here it is compared to a supermarket large organic egg. We will eat her first two surviving eggs today and I just know they will taste like the best eggs in the world!

Good posts everyone!

Just discovered two eggs today: one in the coop, another lying about in the yard. I fluffed up the nesting boxes and put some dummies in them, hope my girls get the idea! They are Israeli chickens - the one you see in my profile picture, and her sister. They are almost 6 months old.

The egg is the one you see on the right - the cream-colored one. You can see it's much smaller than the commercial White Leghorn eggs sitting next to it.

Those aren't our first eggs, but they are the first we got from chickens we hatched and raised ourselves, so it's a special day for us.
