Mareks is best diagnosed with a necropsy when feather shafts or tumor tissue are tested. If you call them, they might have some sort of grant to help you if you cannot afford one. In some cases, a home necropsy may be done, and you could take pictures of the organs, especially the liver and intestines. Small tumors may show up in pictures. You can post them here for any opinions. There can be so many things that might look like Mareks. Even coccidiosis can sometimes look like Mareks because of weakness and dehydration. Is there runny poops or blood? Then I would get some Corid liquid from your feed store, and mix 2 tsp (10 ml) per gallon of water for 5-7 days. If using the powder use 1 1/2 tsp per gallon. Coccidiosis can cause extreme weakness and death. If using the Corid liquid, give 3 drops of the undilted tonight and twice a day to the really sick bird.
Im in the same situation, and Im in Ohio. The closest place for me to get a necropsy is a lab 2 hours away and it costs $180.00. I have had lots of people suggest Mareks but then today I was told that it could be Coccidiosis. The person who suggested that was 100% confident and has been raising birds a very long time, so I started my flock on Corrid today. Your story sounds exactly like mine, only we weren't on vacation.
