Poultry and Dogs - Who Has Happy Pictures and Stories?

too cute!!! I cant wait to see what my dog (who is only 1 and a half feet tall) thinks of the chicks!!! she spends a lot of time in my room where the incubator is and where the brooder will be, so whe will probobly spend a lot of time with the chicks. i think she will really like them and I think they will like her because she is white, fluffy, soft, treated our guinea pigs like they were her babies, and doesnt mind being bitten, scratched, or having toy cars drove on her. she also tollerates 30 lb todlers picking her up by her head and giving her "hugs" and she doesnt mind being used as a, pillow, foot rest or lap warmer. so do you think it would be a good idea to let her interact with the chicks once they hatch? she has never seen a chicken before (except on youtube) do you think she would be fine?

Right now I am teaching my cats and dogs that we are going to have a chicken in the house(house chicken). I love the idea of having a "bird" so I am going to have a chicken, not a cockatoo or parrot, I am going to have a chicken. So far all is going good. She(house chicken) is only 2 1/2 weeks old right now so she is still small. I bring her out of the brooder everyday ans she either sits on my shoulder or next to me on the desk at the computer. In the evening she gets to come out and run around on the floor a bit under close watchful eyes. I will post how it all goes on my blog as time goes on.

I thought my three yorkies will love my baby chickies, but they want to eat them !! one female dont care but snip at them. But when chickies got bigger, my doggies dont bother them any more. (Hens like to peck at them ! ) My doggies love to roll in their pen, smells lovely !!

We had to ask ourselves this same question, especially since we got an older dog. We read tons of things online, from muzzles to shock collars. I can't imagine needing those, and luckily we were in a position where all it took was a little time with the dog, some scolding or a pop when she barked or snipped and them, and a lot of help from our large rooster who fought back and quickly became alpha in the yard. Getting a dog definitely gave him newfound spunk. We were hesitant to introduce new chickens, but we kept them outside in the coop and made extra efforts to be there with the dog anytime we opened it to feed them, etc, letting her know that we cared for the chickens. All that said, it depends on your dog, it's temperament, drawing a strict line and the time and attention you give to making sure s/he doesn't cross it.

To leave on a gross, but interesting story: my wife's grandfather suggested something that seems pretty terrible, but he lived by it, saying, "What works, works. If the dog kills a chicken, tie the dead chicken around the dogs neck and leave it there until it rots. Dog'll never mess with 'em again."

I was told the same thing, and it may be the only thing that's gonna work for our dog. He is DEFIANETLY a bird dog. Whenever they are near the fence in the run, he charges at them. And now that we have chicks, whenever the kids have them out, we have to put them up in their clubhouse and the dogs runs around barking and jumping (it's 5ft off the ground) until we put them back. He just goes nuts (a black lab male). So we're either going to have to wait till he's MUCH older, or kennel him everytime we want to let the ladies out. Or try your grandpas method. Probably wait till I have a hen that's about done laying and let her loose with the roo and see what happens. that way it's not a huge loss. :)

I just hatched 30+ eggs and have two dogs and 3 cats in my house. I have one room just for the chicks, but still the two dogs and one of the cats love to go in there while I am feeding and watering. So far so good. The cat get supervised visitation, and my one dog thinks they are her babies. The other dog looks and at time tries to snip but she gets a firm scolding and we are good. It is so funny to see the cat or my small dog in the brooder box with them. They just sit there and watch them, the get out quick if the chicks start to peck at there paws or face. I will try to get some pics but most of the time the camera is in another room and I don't like to leave them unsupervised at all.

The other day, our big old rooster attacked my daughter's little salmon faverolle cockerel. Timmy the English Shepherd broke up the fight and ran off the rooster. Then he went back to the cockerel, sniffed it all over, gave it a kiss and sent it on its way.
