Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Ok, pictures taken today. First off let me tell you that they were terrified of the camera... crazy things! So, their postures are a bit off. I've talked about the bantam project so I will show those pictures today. I guess after looking at most of the ones posted today, they don't look very terrified, but some others were that I am not putting up today. These guys look pretty peaceful.

First, is the trio that were all too big but beautiful birds. They don't live together, I would bring the male every third day or so and leave him in with the girls for about a half hour.

You can see the girls on the other side of the wire here and I hope you can make out just his profile with those girls behind him.

And the girls... This first one is his sister. She generally fans her tail more.

This little girl really is that much darker than the other girl. I like the darker blues because I think some of the people who breed them try to get them too light and they end up looking like a silver laced something or other. The standard says an even shade of bluish slate. I've looked up samples of actual slate and found some medium range ones and she's pretty close. She could be just a little lighter.

That's the first pen. I think I'll do each pen in separate posts.

Now for the second pen including the splash boy that has a lot of red in his shoulders. His tail is entirely too high but what made it worse is the couple of times I've had to catch him, he did a quick turn and I ended up bending some of the tail feathers.

The girls he is with here are just living partners. He needed to learn to mate efficiently so as not to really stress the girls I wanted to collect eggs from. He was not originally impressed with my two large fowl girls in with him (the blue ones) and I'm pretty sure he thought they were boys at first given their size and large red combs.

I will not be hatching any eggs from this group. He gets taken, every couple days, over to spend some time with the girls coming up...

This little black hen is a beauty! Look at the width of her tail feathers. She's a bit more upright here than normal. The next picture shows her in more of a typical relaxed stance.

Ack! I think I deleted the one of my splash that was good! I'll have to get another one. You can kinda sorta see the splash girl. Can you believe she is a large fowl? Pretty good type and coloring, a nice alert posture most of the time and tail fanned. She was scared of the camera and so she dropped her front end. I'll have to try and get a better one of her later.

The last two boys don't have mates yet so I'll just show them.

He's trying to ignore me but you can see how much white he has and his legs are white too. If my camera had cooperated, and actually taken the picture when I pressed the *&%^%^*) button, it would have been a much nicer shot. Then he realized I had a camera pointed at him and this is the best one I could get.

The black boy is much nicer...

You can see how the tips of his comb lean over just a little. Other than that, I can't find anything about him that I don't like. ETA: his tail is too high but that's about it.

very nice Lacy

My Empordanesa got some new gravel today.
we had some rain last night and with last weeks 11 inches. just too much mud around the coops

A larger open coop is in the works.
I like open coops the best out here.

they are by no means perfect. I look forward to separating them into 2 groups and getting to work.
The good.
The hens form is real nice. The roosters do not have too much leakage.
They have good yellow legs
Egg size is good.

Bad
not many people have them at all.
size is a little small
would like to have no golden leakage
need more runs !!!

I'm having a hard time understanding how they get into the coop. Is there another door? Is that plywood a ramp or is it shade and umbrella?
the door is on the other side lol.
The plywood is just there as extra shade.

its a bareroot tree pallet coop
generally for my youngsters but Thy are in it until the bigger coop is finished
